When do they start to show? 10% body fat? 8%? I've went from 35% down to about 14% but would love to have visible abs. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

5 to 10% for men, 12 to 18% for women. According to various sources.
  • excellent question. I have somewhat visible abs and I am trying to get to the same place. I know for women we can get the more visible abs by doing weighted ab exercises. And my eating habits are impeccable but I do have a cheat meal a week. Good luck!

Have you been working your abs? You may not have developed enough muscle for it to show.
  • Be patient with yourself. 6-pack abs is a combination of your diet meaning less sugar and great combination of protein and abs exercises. The less bmi you have the better results you will see soon. Also, my 12 yo son and I complete 8 min. abs on utube daily for almost a month, and he is getting closer in getting more definition in his abs. Hope this helps! Also, contracting your abs doing any type of cardio and/or strength training helps as well. Good luck. Keep up the good work!

Like she said you may need to strengthen and build up the muscle and about 10% BF should be good. If they’re not there they won’t push through the skin unless you get to a very low BF. If you think this is your issue I would recommend adding crunches, planks and hanging leg raises to your exercises.

Not to be discouraging, but part of the "6-pack abs" is genetics. Some individuals, no matter how fit or lean, never have the visible bulging of the abdominal muscles characteristic of a 6-pack. When it comes to how our muscular strength is visible genetics plays a part. I wouldn't concentrate so much on exactly how you look. Is your stomach flat? Does your core feel strong? Are you able to complete difficult core exercises comfortably? These are the things that you have control over.

Posting bump in a thread moves it back to the first page of the forum so that it is more visible, and consequently more forum visitors will read it.

Thanks for the great feedback! I think I have decent core strength, but I could definitely do more ab work. We do a lot of core/ab work (planks, crunches and a bunch of other exercises) in my fitness class (2x per week) and I generally test out pretty well. That said, I really have no idea how realistic it is for me but I'm still going to shoot for them! :) Now that I've lost all this weight, I need to move to another goal! I'm hoping they start to show more when I hit 150 lbs (I'm at 154 now).
