i wore my heart rate monitor for the first time today! i liked it and it was super easy to use. i was worried about it distracting me as i ran, but it didn't. i could tell it was there, but it didn't hinder me at all. :) anyway, i ran 4.13 miles in 26:29 (a personal best for me) and burned 236 calories. my heart rate was consistently in the 170s, usually around 176. is that a good range? should i try to run slower/easier and keep the range lower? thanks for any advice.

Just google it! 170 is good. 220- age = heart rate.

When I run my heart rate range is consistently in the mid 170's as well. I typically run 3-5 miles at a time. My pace is slower at 9 minute miles average. Brisk walking my heart rate averages in the mid 130's.

For easy runs, I'm usually around 65% of VO2 max. But for pace runs I'm upwards of 80%. For regular cardio like Tae Bo I'm about 75%.

I stay in the 150's unless I am running under an 8 min mile pace, then it is in the mid 160's, but my resting rate is between 51 and 55 depending on the day.

    4.13 miles in 26:29? Thats flying at a 6:25 mile pace :)

Hmm I do see that too but it seems wrong... mine would be 195 bpm... I would die haha

220-Age is just a general guideline. I'm 41, but my max heart rate is 183. The only safe way to know your true max heart rate is to get it tested in a lab.

220 - age is your maximum heart rate, not necessarily what you should be aiming for. I wouldn't cope with working out with a heart rate of 198 lol, mine is normally 160-180 :)

My highest average heart rate has been 165 BPM on a 5k race (haha one and only race so far!) - average was 165, and max showed as 176.

I'm never quite sure about all these ranges and zones, it seems to me that my HR goes up and that's it, the only way to bring it down is to stop whatever I'm doing which surely defeats the object?? It does come down quickly after exercise, so my recovery period's not too bad....

How do you get your HR to *stay* at or within a particular zone??

OK here is mine I am 31 - I do turbofire during the longer classes its around 165-"ish" , Firedrills in long classes - 180's - "ISH" on the short HIIT classes it varies in the 170s ( I think because they arent as long) So for me during exercise 155+-180s depending on HIIT or normal exercise .. Hope this helps

I'm 40 and typically my HRM says my average is in the hgih 140's-152...my high is usually 172-180. This is in the elliptical. I change up the incline and resistance every once in awhile...that's when it gets alot higher
