Am I being weak or realistic?

Sorry guys, this might be a long one!

Today, I changed my weight goal from 130lbs to 147lbs. Lately, I've been having a lot of worrying thoughts regarding weight loss, (should i stop eating, should i purge after meals, so on and so forth). Now i've suffered with depression, anxiety disorder and I have an obsessive personality, so I'm very suseptible to becoming...well, obsessed with things (stating the obvious now, I know.)

So when I started to have unhealthy thoughts about my weight I panicked and thought to myself, wait a minute, why am I putting myself through this?
At the moment, I weight 158lbs, having lost 12lbs over the past few weeks. My measurements are 38 - 28 - 38 and I'm 5'5. I've always had an hourglass figure and I've always been curvy, so I suddenly wondered if my goal of 130 was too low, realistically. I cant even picture myself at 130lbs!!

My question is though, is this me being realistic or lazy?
Sorry i've probably babbled, but I'm worried that I've changed my goals for the wrong reasons?
Ahhhhh, confused!!

  • Realistic. Not because your original goal was out-there but because of the undue stress you are putting on yourself. Stick with the closer goal and then re-evaluate when you get here. Perhaps when you reach your first goal you will be happy or maybe you'll want to tone for a few weeks and then continue on to your original goal. Who knows? The journey doesn't need to be stressful. Try to do what you can to enjoy it! You are right to figure what is going wrong, getting fit should never be akin to slow torture. You realized you were starting to obsess and are addressing it head on, great job!!

Maybe even take a week to focus on exercise rather than on food intake? For instance this week I was way over my calories at least half the days due to family events and not keeping myself in check (talking about 500 to 1000) but I made sure to keep my exercise goals in check: increase stretching and reach my 600 minutes. My weight stayed the same but my body got a chance to heal with all the stretching and my measurements decreased!

    Best of luck :flowerforyou:

I think you're being really, really smart about this. You're recognizing that certain thoughts are unhealthy and you're taking steps before those thoughts lead to unhealthy behaviors - WAY TO GO!!

So go ahead and change your goals. 147 may be just perfect for you. Maybe you'll get there and decide you can lose a little more in a healthy and safe manner. Whatever works and is healthy FOR YOU.

Congrats on taking a step back and evaluating what you're doing. Really, really well done.
  • Thanks both of you, for replying and letting me know your thoughts, I'm hoping that I've made the right choice, and you're both right, perhaps once i get to 147 I'll feel better and be ready to lose some more weight or tone up a bit more. It's good to know that I'm not just being lazy and taking the easy way out, there is some sense in my thoughts process!

    i think thats fine.
Some people even have goals a stage at a time, like GW1= x amount
    GW2 = y amount
maybe have your first goal amount and then see how you feel from there, then its not putting too much pressure on yourself and doesnt seem like such a massive number

I think you made a great decision for yourself. I've been thinking about increasing my goal weight as well. Then, when I get there, I'd want to start focusing more on fitness and let my weight go where ever is natural.

I'm voting for realistic. And it's not as if the goal is carved in stone. You may get to your initial goal and love where you're at, or you may get there and want to tweak it further.

I compare it to an artist painting a portrait, or sculpting a statue. The hardest part is deciding when it's done. When it needs one more brush stroke, one more chisel... or when one more stroke or chisel will ruin the whole damn thing.

Except we're NOT portraits or statues. We don't have a deadline where we have to hand over the finished product to a gallery or the person who commissioned it. For better or worse  we're never really finished.

Goals are fluid. They can change. Get down to your 147. Maintain it for a week or two and decide if you are happy there. If you are, great. If not decide how much more you think is realistic. Nothing is set in stone.

I too am 5'5" and have similar measurements to you.

When I started off losing weight my goal was 133lbs as that's what I was before I started piling the weight on. I managed to get down to around 146lbs and was told by my mother not to lose any more weight. My measurements are all smaller than they were when I was at 133lbs, which I found odd, but when I looked at my body it had changed entirely.

I've since put on a little bit of weight, and I'm really looking forward to getting back to the 147lb mark!

Bottom line, look at yourself in the mirror for as long as it takes for you to decide your goal.

    Totally and sensibly realistic.

Why put yourself thru' the agony of trying to lose the extra weight to reach 130? I did something similar a while back and realise I was being unrealistic about my overall weight loss. I changed my goal. I want to be healthy and to sustain the weight loss, not lose it and then gain back some if I starting eating normally again.

If when you reach your new goal, you are not happy then readdress it. Small steps. BTW I think for some one of your height, your new goal is perfect!

Realistic - as what's right for others might not be right for you!!! Better to enjoy the journey than end up where you do not want to be mentally......!
