I don’t see many 60+ men posting here. I don’t have a lot in common with a 22 year old fitness coach training for an Iron Woman triathlon, so I was wondering if there is enough interest from older men that are exercising to improve their health and improve their quality of life? I was thinking of posting progress on monthly exercise goals, starting in August. We could offer each other support and tips on the progress of our journey.

To start it off, I’m 66, retired for 12 years, Type 2 diabetic, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. My highest weight was 332 lbs, but may have been higher as that was as high as my scales would go. Over the last 15 years, using all the diets and programs out there, I’m now down to 259 lbs. About 6 months ago, after taking a series of cooking classes that stressed fresh organic fruits and veggies, we started buying at the farmer’s markets and have pretty much quit buying processed foods. I also quit eating pasta and most bread since they spike by blood sugar. The changes in my diet were enough to where I have been taken off three of my blood pressure meds, half of my cholesterol meds and 1 of my diabetes meds. Over the 4th of July, I spent a few days in the hospital with Artial Fibrillation. I was placed on an 1800 calorie, low sodium diet and told to get off my fat butt and do some exercise. This is when I joined MFP, to help me track my calories, sodium and exercise. I have been walking for about 30 minutes a day since then, and have lost 12 lbs.

My exercise goal for July was to walk 30 minutes a day for 5 days per week, 600 minut4s a month. I met that goal yesterday. I know you are supposed to increase your goals to push yourself, but I am going to keep my goal the same for August since The Bride and I are going on an Alaskan cruise for two weeks and I don’t know how difficult that will be to exercise regularly.
