I LOVE sushi and any/all fish. My all time fave is grilled ahi. Whenever I log it though, my sodium goes through the ROOF!! Does all fish really have that high of sodium content? How can I put fish into my diet without the sodium hitting me so hard?

I would like to know this to. I thought it was from the soy sauce, but I guess not...

Hmm...... fish isn't naturally high in sodium. The excess must be added in the cooking process I suppose.

for sushi if you use a lot of rice vinegar and some sea salt (optional) you hardly need to use any soy sauce

Being as how most fish live in SALT water that shouldn't be a huge surprise :)) I love sushi, too. However, I rarely eat it, not due to high sodium content, I just can't find many people to go eat it with me! Since it's usually a splurge for me, just drink tons of water to flush out the sodium. Even if it's a regular meal for you, still drink a lot of water and maybe find a better fish that isn't so sodium dense.

Search for the fish you are eating with the word "raw"..... look for the ones that don't have the * in front of it. example, search "tuna raw".

Oh how I love sushi - the whole family does, even my boys 8 and 5. Whenever I have a sushi I always make sure to drink a lot of water to help flush out the sodium. I don't tend to use much in the way of the soy sauce but I LOVE wasabi!

40mg of sodium is a lot? :indifferent:

Fish is generally low in sodium... where are you getting your info from?

I just wanted to add in... instead of soy sauce (even the low sodium soy sauce), use Bragg's Amino Acids.... ITS THE BEST!!! It TASTE like REGUALR SOY SAUCE, BUT it doesn't have the negative charateristics of soysauce (like high sodium).... FOR REAL!! I cook wiith it , eat suchis with it, eat it in rice!! OMG! it's the best! PROMISE!!! give it a try! A little on the priceier side but actually GOOD FOR YOU.... BIG PULE SIGN ALL THE WAY AROUND!!

Ah, but most marine fish secrete large amounts of salt from their gills and in their urine so their meat should not necessarily be any saltier than that of freshwater fish or land animals. Sorry, the biologist in me couldn't help but respond.

I'm thinking maybe I need to be more careful about which fish I pick in the database. Thanks all!

Oh, and the sushi rolls are the highest -- I just saw a spicy tuna roll that was 1079mg in sodium -- so I think I'll stay away from the rolls from now on.

I think the culprit might be the Nori (seaweed) within the roll. Do you like sashimi? They do sell lower sodium Nori, but I doubt any sushi places have it.

Unflavored nori doesn't have that much sodium.

Well, I guess I don't know what they use in restaurants then, but my aunt is on a low sodium diet and they told her to limit her sushi intake because of the Nori - it's inherently salty.
