Type 2 Diabetes!

I have been on this weight loss journey sice Dec. 2010. Lost close to 33 pounds, then was taken off insulin and put on Actos in April. My weight started fluctuating and did so for a couple of months and now it's just steady going up. I have gained 14 pounds of the 33 lost. Went to the doctors this morning because I have developed another "side effect" water retention. Was told by the doctor that the Actos has caused the increase in apetite and the water retention which has resulted in the weight gain but all he could tell me is to keep doing what I am doing and we will monitor it. I am so frustrated. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle, I do not want to use the medications and the diabetes as a excuse. Can you over come the side effects and get control over your body again and start losing again? Can you over come the feeling of being hungry all the time? Can you get the water retention under control?
I really wanted to be fit and fab for my 40th birthday in November, but I feel like I am losing control and letting old habits come back into play!
I do not want to end up back on insulin, either, but I keep catching myself eating the same stuff that put me on it in the first place.

Stay strong in your journey. Don't let quicksand take hold of you. "Quicksand" is hard to overcome but it can be done. Keep pushing through, continue to eat right and work out. Remember why you are losing weight in the first place. Get special jewelry as a constant reminder of what your in the marathon for. Just like our wedding bands as visual reminders of a covenant we made with our partners.0

Hi Penny...I too am a type 2 Diabetic...In my Diabetic Education Classed I learned that the only oral diabetic medication that does not cause weight gain is Metformin, so that is what I insisted on taking...I also retained a lot of water for different reasons (following some surgeries)....Water retention is NOT good...If you are experiencing edema, your doctor should prescribe a diuretic for you to take...Feel free to "fire" your doctor if you are not happy with the care that you are receiving...I did and I am doing 100% better now...Please, don't give up..!!!...DRINK LOTS OF WATER..!!...When I went to a Naturepath, they told me, "The solution to pollution is dilution"...I lost 40 pounds in 18 months just by increasing my water intake...I drink 1 gallon per day and I don't count coffee, etc.,....Feel free to add me and I will be more than happy to lend you some support.... :flowerforyou:0

Penny- have you discussed a lower carb diet with your doctor? Paleo or Primal Blueprint are great for type 2 diabetes. I was hypoglycemic and on my way to diabetes eventually I am sure and then started on Primal Blueprint and have only had one or 2 lows since then and that was due to not following the plan for a couple of weeks but got right back on and I can still have potatoes or rice once or twice a week with no reaction now. My A1C was excellent no sign of either diabetes or hypoglycemia and that was last summer after doing Primal a year, been on it 2 years in August and also lost 84 pounds. Best thing I ever did and cravings just about disappear after a few days so I am rarely tempted by anything not on plan and I use the recipes and adapt everything I eat so I get the same taste and textures but without the junk. Google Primal Blueprint and his free (all free) website come up.0
