Losing weight in your 60's is very difficult

I have been on one diet or another for the past 50 years - losing a few pounds and gaining it back. However, I have never given up hope that someday I would be slim. Is it possible that finally at the age of 63 I might be successfull? Health issues have added to my determination to succeed. Are there others out there who are fighting the same battle?

  • Yes. You can do it!! You must find what works for you. Count your calories, eat in moderation.. Walk a little. It will come off.

I'm 50 and I know its harder but its still possible. I have a dear friend who is 59 and over the last 2 years, she lost 100 lbs. Every time I think I can't lose, I think of her. It took her a while but slowly and steadily, she got there and walked her first 10K last Fall.

I will be 60 next year. I've been on MFP for about a year and a half and lost about 25 lbs. The biggest thing for me was being honest with tracking exercise and adjusting my food intake to the numbers when I haven't done anything to burn extra calories. The exercise database helped me figure out what I was doing to burn calories without "trying". Like house work and yard work. I got to my goal in less than a year and I've been able to stay there for 7 or 8 months now. I love this site.

I turn 60 this year. I've been on MFP since Dec 2009. I log everything I eat, I do an hour of cardio exercise six days a week and I only occasionally go over my calorie limit. I'm losing weight at a slower pace than I did when I was younger but I've lost quite a bit. (I'm two pounds away from my first big goal so I'm holding off giving out my numbers just yet.)

At any age, I believe the key is perserverance, persistence and patience. At our age, I think these are a little easier than when we were younger and thought that we could make ourselves over into perfection. Eating better and exercising more makes you feel better and relieves a lot of the aches and pains of aging. I feel years younger and I look forward to years of feeling great. I'm pretty happy with the way I look too. So I don't think there's anything "hard" about this at all! I'm having a great time.

I will be 59 at the end of this year. I thought I couldn't lose the weight, but so far I've lost 41 pounds. It can be done. I watch my calories and sodium as well. I walk 20-25 minutes a few times a week.
