Bike reviews Uk

I'm in desperate need of bike reviews! I have a really rubbish cheap mountain bike at the moment that feels like it's going to fall apart if I hit a bump or go too fast! It also has no traction when on gravel and gets stuck in the 6th gear...
So, any UK people know of any good makes of bikes? Something sturdy and reliable, great for off road and gravel tracks, and something with suspension. I have about £200-300 to spend.
I've tried looking through eBay and Halfords just to see what's out there but I'm weary of ending up with some cheap generic brand instead of something a bit sturdier. Any help would be appreciated!

I heavily favour Scott bikes, but I'm a road and hybrid rider these days (not too many rough trails in London, unless you count the potholes on Camden Street). You might be able to get a Scott Aspect MTB in your price range if you shop around, but I think that most of the range are hardtails rather than having sprung suspension.
Don't forget to take advantage of any Ride to Work schemes that your employer might have; you can get a lot more for your money that way.0 -
Oh thanks for that! I've never heard of Scott bikes but I'll have a google!
I was considering a hybrid because I do intend to use it on roads, but only occasionally and will use it predominantly for off-roading!
You're a braver lady than me, riding on London streets! Have seen one two many accidents to ever consider it!
I already checked with my employer, but we're not eligible as we live on -site and therefore have no where to ride to! lol
I was considering the Carrera Valour 2011 as it's convenient (Halfords everywhere!) and the '09 model has fantastic reviews!0
