More healthy for sure but many newbies don't realize that a calorie is still a calorie.... Stick with fresh produce as best you can (something I still struggle with after all these years) & stay away from the packaged snack foods...

Hey, I'm a veggie too. I've been lacking in iron though which is quite worrying so if anyone has any advice/recipes it would be much appreciated :)

I have had this list from another board and lkept it on file. it is very useful.

I am reading this book right now. it is awesome! "Appetite for Reduction" Isa Chandra Moskowitz Has recipees and all nutritional info listed.

Vegan -- Vegans not only abstain from eating meat, meat byproducts, dairy and eggs, they do not eat animal products of any kind. For example, they do not eat honey.

Ovo-lacto vegetarian -- Literal translation is "egg-milk vegetarian." This is what most people think of when they think of vegetarians; they do not eat meat or meat byproducts, but they do eat animal products such as dairy, honey and eggs.

Lacto-vegetarians -- Do not eat eggs but do eat dairy products (many Hindus are lacto-vegetarians).

Ovo-vegetarians -- Do not eat dairy products but do eat eggs.

Pescatarian -- Literal translation is "fish eater." Pescatarians include fish and other seafood in their diet, but not other meats. This is often a stepping-stone to full vegetarianism, but can also simply be a way of eating a more healthy diet by giving up red meats.

Fruitarians -- Do not eat any plant product that involves killing the plant; they mostly eat fruit and nuts.

None of the Above (NOTA) -- For folks who feel they don't quite fit into any of the above categories. Some people also use the word "flexitarian

Sure, post it! I've been vegetarian for 20-some years, but can always learn more. And my wife (also a veggie) and I are now looking to "clean up" our diet, eating less of the prepackaged fake meats (which are good; we're just ready to go to the next level). I'm actually planning on making homemade seitan for the first time soon (maybe this weekend). I'll let everyone know how it goes!

I have only been doing this for 3 months. i love it though. I find it hard because I stopped eating meet but my husband and daughter still do. He has been great and even trying veggie meals. He is the cook of the house so it is even harder. i can see myself wanting to start cooking more. i feel great not eating meat. Fish has been tuff, but so far 1 week without.

I also seem to be lacking in iron. I wasn't aware of it until I started logging in MFP. I still crave seafood/fish after a year. I'm not sure why. Congrats on going veg. It makes you feel so good to know you're on your way to healing your body, helping the environment and the animals.

Awesome!!! I'll have to check out some of those links.

BJPCraig-I've made seitan a couple of times, some of my attempts came out better than others. Are you making the kind that's cooked in broth or the kind that's rolled up and baked in the oven? I hope you'll share the recipe if it's good!

chelraeb-I'm in the same boat as you with the fish thing. I've been veg for a year but I would love a piece of fish every now and again. I'm just not willing to do it, but boy do I miss it!

gish06-I live in a mixed household too, so I feel your pain. My husband and sons eat meat, but not me. Sometimes it can be a bit difficult when we have to work around my dietary restrictions, but most of the time it works out well.

Great info in this post! I've been vegan for over 4 years and although I've had my occassional challenge, I feel infinitly better (spiritually, physically etc) then I did before I made the switch. I don't like faux meat products and eat lots of beans, grains, and fresh veggies - the possibilities are infinite!

One time a friend was surprised I didn't eat shrimp. He was like, "Wait, you consider shrimp to be an animal?" I said, "Well, it sure as hell isn't a vegetable, is it?"
