Question about calorie intake when incorporating exercise in

I have been dieting for the past seven months and I have incorporated exercise into my diet for the past 5 months but the following question has kept running across my mind. When I am dieting and eating a 1,200 calorie diet am I supposed to eat more calories (the calories I ended up burning during my exercise) or do I just keep eating my normal 1,200 calories. I know that this site for example says "You've earned an extra 400 calories from exercise today" The 400 calories being the amount that was burned during exercise. I know this sounds silly but I just wasn't sure exactly what I should be doing. I have always thought that I need to just continue keeping my intake at 1,200 calories which is what I have been doing but I am concerned that doing this is going to make my body go into starvation mode. Any suggestions and thoughts is appreciated. Thanks!
