How do I get over being grossed out by fresh fruit imperfect

I never really heard of such unnatural fear of fruit.....
Spray it down with anti-bacterial soap in your bathroom I guess....
haha it isn't the bacteria I am scared of! I can't see that.0 -
I'll just look at it as boosting my immune system. But the cow poo part is kinda gross though. Although I don't think rinsing it with water is really going to help much lol
"To keep your family's food safe to eat, you need to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Even if there is no visible soil clinging to your produce, bacteria can be present. Once ingested, that bacteria could cause illness. It's a good idea to always wash your hands and produce before preparing any meal or snack. "

Nectarine = Peach without fuzz.
This sounds like a neurosis. Do you have other phobias like this? Unrealistic fear isn't healthy and leads to disordered behavior.
I had a nectarine and it did not taste at all like a peach to me. And no, I don't have any other "phobias" as you put it.
 Well, it doesn't taste like a canned peach, that's for sure. You'll be fine. A bruise on fruit won't hurt you. Keep doing what you're doing, trying new things.
I used to be a really picky eater. In looking back at it, I used it as a means of control .....when you are a kid, that's one of the few things you have any control over - what goes in your mouth!
Sorry, what I meant was that it didn't taste anything like the fresh peaches I also bought! Anyway, I wish I could say that it was a control issue for me...it really wasn't an issue when i was a kid though. I ate anything and everything that was served to me. I am a little upset now that I wasn't served some better things! I do have a daughter and it is important to me that she not be raised on overprocessed boxed foods (too bad that is all my husband wants to buy because "it is cheap")0 -
A lot of people feel this way about meat. People are used to skinless boneless hunks of protein under saran wrap and they're completely grossed out by chopping the head off a chicken and then plucking the feathers off... For me I'd rather see the general health of the animal prior to slaughter and the same goes for fruit.
Even with fresh fruit we are spoiled with "perfection" they wax it and weed out the "less pretty" fruit. When I stayed with my in-laws for five months my father in law had a small orchard growing several varieties of plums, some peaches, persimmions, oranges, lemons, figs, clementines, pears, grapes, and nuts. The fruit was small and dull looking and it wasn't very pretty, but OH is was so delicious. No pesticides, no wax, just lots of TLC
Maybe if you have access to a small pick-your-own orchard you might be able to really appreciate how delicious fresh from the tree fruit can be.
Also if you're worried about pesticides, peaches and grapes are horrible offenders.0 -

Good points but I'm kind-of anti-germaphobia. And I would consider myself to have a really good immune system... I rarely get sick when others around me are. But its whatever each person feels comfortable with.... thoroughly washing their produce or not.0 -
Watch Food Inc. It'll change the way you look at food for the rest of your life. I too grew up on processed crap. The extent of my fruit was bananas, and salad was iceberg lettuce with a couple tomatoes cut up, and drenched in miracle whip. You CAN change your "tastes". Just seriously watch it. I much prefer a fruit salad over a chocolate bar now.
FOOD INC ROCKS. Changed my life in many ways!0 -

This is why I stopped eating meat/fish entirely. If it had a head or heart I don't want it.0 -
Vinegar is a natural disinfectant. If you dillute that with some water you can use that to clean your veggies and fruit and get rid of some of the bacteria.0

I agree! I'm the very same way. I think I'm the only person at work that does not use hand sanitizer. But that's a whole other issue since many hand sanitizers produce false estrogens in the body...
Those fruit wash solutions always creep me out. Just keep doing whatever it is you are doing, because it is working for you and your immune system.0 -
Ha I think I'm completely the opposite. Is it weird that I like when my fruits and vegetables are kinda dirty? Like carrots for example... I don't like to wash them too much... makes me feel like I'm eating some of the soil and getting some of the minerals from it LOL. And I never wash any organic produce that I buy.
You should still wash your organic produce. Just rinse with water. They may have traces of organic fertilizer (read: cow poo) or the person that picked them may not have had the cleanest hands. The people in the grocery store might also not have the cleanest hands.
Mind you, I eat veggies out of my garden all of the time without washing them. But I know my hands are clean and usually I'm just rinsing off some dirt...not dirty grocery store worker hand residue. I
Omg ive just had this thought that my carrots might have been handled by someone who just had a poo and didnt wash their hands....0 -

ROFLMAO You eat stuff out of the garden without washing it? For years I have eaten from an organic garden unless there was some reason not to have vegetables from a plant (I mean organic) I wash them no matter what. You never know what animal has been messing with it or if it has had bird poop on it. It may be just plain dirty, you never know. I guess since your worried enough about being organic that you don't mind eating any of that stuff from your garden with who knows what on it.0
