I sometimes forget that with our success here on MFP, so many others are suffering and don't know how to get control over their weight gain.

See above. there is nothing wrong with carbs OR sugar for most people but because high fructose corn syrup and its like are added to nearly every processed food in this country and because we all eat SO much processed food we get way more sugar than we used to.

On top of that, have you ever seen a REAL juice glass, the traditional size? Its 6 ounces - when people had a sugary drink it was usually juice and it was usually a small glass, ONE small glass. Now they bring it t you in 12 ounce glasses or containers and you may have one every day instead of as a treat. Or two. And Soda used to be some thing you went to a special shop for to have as a treat like ice cream or candy. Not something you had sitting in convenient fridge packs to drink 2 of every DAY.

No particular food is causing us to be fat, but OVERCONSUMING foods high in sugar or processed carbs that don't provide our bodies the nutrients we need mean we eat more of other things to GET those nutrients, and then we've consumed 500 extra calories in junk a day.

I personally think that the reason low carb diets work very well for some people is that some people just literally cannot learn moderation. They can't learn to have a 6 ounce glass of juice or a single can of soda once a week instead of every day or several a day or they can't learn to eat only a small bowl of rice or a slice of bread instead of a large bowl or 3 slices so its more successful for them to just cut those foods out altogether. So I mean yes those foods are making some people fat, but you could probably say it about ANY food. There's a guy who lives entirely on sweets who is quite thin because he doesn't eat much in terms of total daily calories (no idea how this is for his overall health but he isn't overweight).

I find it interesting that they now say increase fat and lower carb.. that they now say sat fats are good for you... that they just might be scaring people out of fruit consumption.. that it says you can eliminate grain carbs completely.. I'm slightly skeptical. If fructose made us like we are, i would be massive..

....sounds like it was written by a paleo person!

I agree. I think some people's low carb is our moderation, and it works better.

Interesting article. Of course they are always changing their stories on what causes problems and what is now good for us.... but one of their stories may actually be fairly accurate. I would like to look into this more and research my old food diaries. If I compare what I was eating with my weight back then, I may discover a pattern for myself. : )

The article definitely differentiates between fructose such as high fructose corn syrup and fruit. It is focusing on hidden fructose you don't even know you are consuming not fruit which has fiber, other great nutrition and you know you are eating it.

I think its why any diet that restricts SOMETHING works - low fat diets etc. Most of them kind of force your calories lower so you do eat lower cal and you lose weight, but I can't personally handle not eating a good mix of fat, protein, and carbs. It makes me feel cranky and HUNGRY even when I know my belly is full.

All any diet is useful for is to create a structured eating plan. It's not so much that you eat good things (though that's important for overall health), it's the organized meals that don't allow for over-eating that make the biggest difference weight-wise.
