Peanut butter addiction

So for some reason I am literally addicted to peanut butter.

I eat it by the spoon with nothing else - I'm finding lately it's just empty calories...I know it's okay for you in moderation...but I'm finding myself bingeing. I could try and say "I'll cut back", but once I start, I'm always going back for more..

Open to suggestions/tips/advice!

Is this holding me back? ...or will it?

Thanks!

  • Try Better'n Peanut Butter. You'll only spend 100 cals and 2 g fat per 2 T! I love this stuff!

I have a peanut butter & almond butter addiction. If it's possible maybe you should not buy any. Or buy the single serving packs!

I am right there with you!!! I'm one of those people who believes denial will only make you freak out and gorge. So with great discipline, and the constant reminding myself that this will not be the last time I will be able to eat peanut butter, I have learned to control my portions. A spoonful now and then and I'm good.

But ohhhh, i love it too. I even flat out say it in my profile, LOL!!!

Of course you could do the sensible thing and not buy it so it won't be in the house and where the temptation is the strongest. That's what I do with all my "snack" foods.....

Great suggestions, however I still live at home! Rough day at work, and I'm right back into it...

Where can I buy this "better'n PB?"

I am the same way.. beyond addicted. I used to eat it by the spoonfuls all day long, and then wondered why I had gained 10 pounds! Ha, now I don't even keep it in the house, or else I will devour it!

I only eat it at work, I pack a tablespoon of peanut or almond or cashew butter and have it with celery and carrots. That way I can't go back and get more than I wanted. Also, I only eat the all natural stuff that's just ground nuts (we make our own actually).

your diet might be lacking something and body is craving it...
PB2 is peanut powder without the fat and add to shakes for the taste of it.

When I get my tablespoon fix, I put it on the highest shelf in the cabinet with a few cans of beans or soup on top, then lots of heavy items in front of it so I only take the time to dig for it if I REALLY need my PB lol.

Addictions can be so hard to cope with. Honestly, I would force myself to spread it on something. I think you enjoy the taste of PB but you continue to eat spoonfuls b/c you are not getting "full" from eating it. You would literally have to go through a 1/2 jar to even feel full. I would say, buy yourself some sandwich thins or a bagel. (Yes I know bagels aren't the *best* idea because they require you use up a lot of calories....but whatever will do, will do) and spread your PB on there. You are getting your PB taste and getting full at the same time. I agree though....Better'n PB is a great idea!!

It's always important to listen to your body's cues.
You might need either a) more iron, b) more oils/fats, or c) more salt.
Taking this into account, still have peanut butter, but combine it with something. I like to make basic cookies and add 2 TBS of peanut butter to the batter, so they taste like PB but without the 100 cals per tablespoon. Granted, I eat it out of the jar with a spoon sometimes.. but that's when it's TOM.
And I found out I crave PB when I need iron. Are you taking a B supplement, or are you a vegetarian/don't eat a lot of meat?

Thanks for all the tips! (Scrammit - you're absolutely right!)

I am actually a vegetarian...eat tuna sometimes...have recently starting having "Genuine Health - Vegan Proteins" because I was finding that regular protein's make me feel ill about 30 minutes after consuming... I used to have a B12 supplement...but stopped...I guess I should start that again...

The B vitamins will totally improve your absorption of Iron, not to mention beans (think black beans and rice or a tortilla), lentils (if you can get them), hummus, and other bean and lentil combos with rice, quinoa, potatoes, ect! :)

What??? Who told you peanut butter was empty calories? Never listen to them again. It is high calorie so you should watch the amount because of that, but it's very, very healthy.
  • Just try to limit to a couple of tablespoons, I end up eating peanut butter right out of the jar almost every day for protein (and because it's freaking awesome)

I'm on a peanut butter kick right now, I can't get enough of it. I just make sure it fits in my daily calorie allowance. I just ordered some PB2 off Amazon, hope that be yummy, and help with the calories. :)

I use natural super crunchy on bananas about every day. Love PB!
  • i used to be a total PB addict too. have you ever had Peanut Butter & Co's "Mighty Maple" or "White Chocolate Wonderful" peanut butter? holy crap, hide the spoons. so since my addiction was completely out of control i had to stop buying that brand, now i only buy completely natural (and organic since peanuts are sprayed heavily with pesticides), unsweetened PB or almond butter, and what i do is i'll mix 1 tablespoon of nut butter with 2-3 tablespoons of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and i'll add in cinnamon and stevia (if i'm using it for sweet purposes). so this way you get a ton of PB sauce, for the amount of cals in 1 tablespoon. you can pour it on anything and it'll be delicious

::raises hand:: I, too, am a peanut-butter addict.

Seriously, though, this is something I've been struggling with. I only buy true natural PB - with one ingredient: peanuts. I do NOT believe in eating processed, reduced-fat peanut butters (I have no interested in the PB2 and other type products). I think it's much healthier to learn to eat REAL PB in moderation rather than substitute an addiction for real PB with an addiction for fake/altered PB. PB is good for us - it has healthy oils but like all things you can overdo it. I'm okay if I make myself eat it with other things - on crackers/celery/fruit/etc. or as part of smoothies... but as soon as I start eating it out of the jar I'm in trouble!

It's a matter of self-control and re-teaching myself how to get along with this wonderful food. I WILL make it happen - I refuse to cut PB out of my life. :drinker:

I was going to buy Peanut Butter & Co's Dark Chocolate PB, but maybe I won't! :)
