So I am 31 (for 2 more days anyways) and did my Zumba workout last night...it was AWESOME and I felt it for sure :). I wear a HR monitor (Garmin FR60W) and when the info transferred over I saw my HR was 191 at its highest peak. Is that okay? I don't know how long it was at that point and the average was something like 168 for the entire workout.
I am just curious about the 191 and if it is okay or not...haha

The average of 168 sounds about right. The peak of 191 seems pretty high, how long did your HRM record at 191? Could be a faulty reading by the HRM. Heat and humidity or ridiculous amounts of sweat can make it read off a bit sometimes. Though your max heart rate is probably somewhere around that figure. (220-31age = 189max) Just as a rule of thumb.

220-31= 189 which down to basics is your max heart rate. However if you're a fit 31 then it would be higher. Of course at max heart rate you should be really gasping for air.
  • My peak heart rate on my HRM has hit 191 before. It didn't stay there long but this was when running up a hill or a point where I was working really hard. I think you are okay as long as that number goes down right away. I could not, nor would I want to sustain a 191 heart rate. If it does then you should probably slow down what you are doing or take a small break to let your heart rate come down. Hope this helps! :)

Ugh the room we were in was CRAZY hot so that could have done it too. Off the top of my head I am not sure how long it recorded the 191 reading. But I was sweating pretty good so that could have done it too. I just don't know what going over your max heart rate does, it might turn people away from Zumba if their instructor crashes to the floor from a heart attack...

Oh I was going that is for sure :). But I didn't feel like I was really strugging so maybe that is the difference?

Thank you Carrie! I need to look tonight at the chart and see how long it sustained the 191. Like you said, it could just be it hit it real quick then dropped back down. I just checked the readout on the devise itself not the computer.

Really high HR's can be monitored if you aren't properly hydrated as well... If you see it peak, feel for your pulse yourself. If it seems rapid and weak, stop exercising.
  • True! His calculations are correct. If you want to break that down into what percentage of your max you're in, it would be:
    50% of max is 94.5bpm
    75% of max is 141.75bpm
    90% of max is 170.1bpm
    100% of max is 189bpm
    110% of max is 207.9bpm

The only reason why I did the last one is an example of giving 110%.
