My husband and I have a groupon for Kohana Japanese restaurant. We are going tonight before it expires. I went online and they do not have a menu posted so I can plan ahead. Can I get some points on great choices versus foods to avoid? Thanks in advance!

Any kind of cucumber rolls (sushi wrapped in cucumber instead of rice), sashimi, seaweed salad, miso soup, just avoid anything tempura or mayo-based. Sushi is always a good choice, there are so many options there!

A lot of Japanese food is healthy. Just avoid anything battered or fried and stop when you are full and you should be fine.
  • I have no idea! I just wanted to chime in and say I love GROUPON!:)

Avoid the rolls with mayo/cream cheese in them. The tuna they use in some rolls is a fatty tuna, so maybe avoid that. Try some crab or so. Avoid the rice if possible, and don't get anything tempura-ed.

Yum! Good for you. I"m a huge Groupon junkie. Here is a helpful article about dining out for Japanese food:

Mostly avoid anything "crispy" or battered/fried items. They typically have a huge selection of healthy offerings. Enjoy it!

You have to be really careful with Japanese food. Even Miso has a TON of sodium in it at some places. Honestly, my gut reaction is to tell you to just burn the cash you spent on the Groupon. Or give it to someone else who can use before it expires. I know that that's never the way any of us want to go...trust me. I am faced with the same dilemma on multiple discount sites. But you live and you learn.

If you feel like you absolutely have to go...well, then stick with sushi and sashimi, but NO sauces with them. Avoid the tahini and other creams and sauces that typically come with these foods. Also, order some edamame with NO SALT. Nothing battered. Nothing fried. Avoid the noodles. And avoid thick sauces on everything--they're loaded with sodium.

All great advice!! Sushi's is not a bad choice, you just have to avoid certain things. Remember that even if the fish is fatty (some tuna, salmon, eel), that's good fat so although the fat content is a bit higher than other fishes, it's really good for you. As others said, avoid anything crispy (tempura) or with cream cheese/mayo. They're really good but not really worth the calories in the end, especially when a roll with avocado still has the creamy texture but is much better for you.

I would definitely recommend the seaweed salad if they have it - soooo yummy. Bring your floss though, those critters get jammed in between your teeth worse than popcorn kernel skin.

Drink tons of water before and after to help with the sodium content.

    Have fun!!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Japanese! I never avoid anything they have. We always order from the tappanyaki menu and the portions are huge, so I always have them box half of my order right away, if it's not on my plate I won't eat it and I don't feel like I missed out. But like I said Japanese is my favorite, so I plan my whole day's calories around my dinner. Enjoy your dinner what ever you decide!

I'll add that this my birthday is this week and this is my birthday date. I'm not looking to be perfect, just not to completely mess the diet up.

So far some absolutely great advice. Love it!!

Groupon is a site that you can register at, you put in your city, and then it sends you things that you can buy at a discount. Like this Groupon. I paid $20 for $40 at the Restaurant. www.groupon.com to register.

sushi without wasabi is like a day without sunshine.

Don't panic too much, Yo Sushi have a lot of the nutritional info on their site so you could try logging it as that. It's porbably not like you go out every night, I would say relax and enjoy it a bit!xx
