Does anyone out there have a coonhound or a similar breed? I'm having some serious issues with mine getting out of our gate & running around like an idiot until either the police or a kind stranger directs him home. We're getting invisible fence tomorrow, but I honestly don't think that this will work. He's just that stubborn. We've had him a little over 2 months & he's a VERY sweet dog when he's not running crazy through my neighborhood. Thanks in advace if anyone can give me some tips!

I volunteer at the Humane Society on weekends and we have a few coonhounds and bloodhounds out there. They are notorious for jumping fences. They like to be around people. If you can bring him indoors more often it should help.0

In fact a coonhound is the reason why I have not been able to exercise this week. She really did not want to go back into her kennel and I had to pick her up and carry her kicking the whole way...jammed my knee. Poor baby really wanted to be around her people!0

Well he's a hound dog with natural instincts to hunt. So if he is smelling something, he's gonna try to get out. My dogs kept getting out too so we installed a shocker wire to the bottom of the fence. It sounds mean, but it's really not. They shocked themselves one time and never tried to get out again. We even turned it off after a few days and they still never tried to get out again......until my female figured out that it was off and dug a hole to get out, we hooked it back up and she hasn't gotten out again. You can get them at HomeDepot and they are not expensive.
Good luck

We had a dog that acted like that when I was a kid. She was already an adult when we got her. she was so bad, once she went to the hospital (across town) and got inside through the revolving door! It got so it was happening everyday, and she was an indoor pet, she would jump our fence when she went out to pee! We ended up giving her away to a family that owned a lot of farming land in the country. I hope the invisible fence helps you, could you tie him up while he's outside? Just make sure to give him lots of slack. How about obedience classes?0 -
Even hound dogs and dogs that are bred for sporting or other "jobs" need to be with their pack, you are your dog's pack and leaving him outside you are making him feel as though he is an outsider or being shunned from the pack. Dog's get bored enough when left alone as well, unless you can get out with him i'd recommend bringing him inside with you, walking with him and playing with him will give him good exercise. The bottom line is your dog needs his pack, leaving him outside unsupervised is going to lead to more incidences of running away. Dog's are not solitary animals, they depend very much on their families.1

He is an inside dog & is very loved & active with my kids, my husband & myself. He has ATE a hole out through our fence, dug out & nearly jump it (6' tall). We have another dog that he's always playing with outside, too. that's what I don't get. he's around us all the time & the second we let him out, he does his business & then escapes. This last time, I was outside playing with him & the other dog. I thought he was just going up onto the porch. Nope. Turns out he was figuring out how to open my gate. :grumble:0 -
Also, if I tie him out, he slips his collar or chews through the 20' cable. He is very rarely left "unsupervised" and those are the time that he leaves. If he is out there by himself, it is when I am putting my kids down for a nap or attempting to cook dinner...so 1/2 hour max & I'm always looking out to check on him b/c my kitchen window faces my fenced in, large back yard.
Thanks for the advice. I'll see what else we can do with him.0 -

He must be from Iowa.
LOL As far as I know, he's an Ohio dog.0 -
Have you thought about crating him when you're taking care of other responsibilities? It would be a safer option for both of you with him being confined for that little while that you can't keep an eye on him. Also please don't think I was suggesting you don't take care of your pup Just sharing information!0

Oh, no! I appreciate it! I've never had a coondog & he's more challenging than my 3 kids! LOL
We crate him when we leave the house (which isn't often, I'm a stay at home mom). If I try to crate him while I'm doing other things around the house, he sits in his crate & barks at me every time I walk by or a leaf falls off the tree. Seriously. He was barking at falling leaves in our front yard yesterday. :noway: And you know hounds, they don't bark quietly! I think that I am just going to have to keep him crated until the invisible fence is installed & we're done with our training for that. The lady told me that we can't let him out on his own until about 4 weeks after it is installed so we'll see how this goes. I'm just praying it works.
As far as obedience training, I won't be able to start that until Jan. at the earliest b/c of my husband's work & school schedule. We trained our other dog & I've been using the same techniques with him, but he is just SO set on not listening to me when I call for him. He sits well & stays when he's in the house, but to get him to do it outdoors is like pulling teeth.
I love this dog so much, but he's just trying my every nerve with this getting out business.0 -
Thanks for that, Marla.
Natasha - that's what I'm thinking, too. I might have to take up jogging just to get him out of the confines of my yard. Crazy dog. Thanks for your help!0 -

Yea, the two we have at the shelter definitely give me my exercise!
They are a very headstrong breed.0 -

I have a Treeing Walker Coonhound. Absolutely gorgeous but completely crazy! She's coming up on 11 years old and most of them have been ....challenging. She's too cute to stay mad at though!! Getting loose and running through the neighborhood is one of our biggest problems. She's fine most of the time but if she manages to slip out the door she's off like a shot and doesn't come back until she's had her fill of new smells....which can take awhile.
We've never gone the invisible fence route because I've always been told hounds don't do well with them (sight hounds or scent hounds) they see or smell something and they're so focused on taking off after it that they're through the fence with a shock before they realize it. Once they're through they're gone.
My best advice is take him for long walks for his exercise. If you're going to leave him outside you may need to chain him out (that's what we do with our's) rather than letting him have the run of the yard so he can jump the fence.
Good luck!0 -
It also helps if you wear them out! I take my beagle/basset out on VERY long hikes in the woods...he used to escape every chance he got, and now he just wants to cuddle on the couch when we're not hiking!0

I think everyone should adopt a dog so they can take a picture with them and use it as their av.

But yes, everyone should go adopt a dog! (loving people though, no crazies!)0 -

Those are the best kind of dogs to get. I love my rescues, even if they cause me grief.
Soooo...I'm thinking that I just need to start getting up at 4:30 to go on runs with him. I'll try it out tomorrow & see how the rest of the day goes. Thanks so much, everyone!0 -

Poor Max is going to feel left out though! :sad:0 -
We spent $2000 putting in an invisible fence around our 5 acres. And the darned neighbors keep giving our dogs treats, so she blows through it on a daily basis! She's a german shepherd mix though, and when we put her collar on, we really have to make sure there isn't hair under it. I'm thinking about shaving a patch on her neck to make it easier.
I yelled (well, complained loudly) at the neighbors last week, asking them if they couldn't see the little white flags running along the edge of the woods. I continued by telling them that if they keep giving her treats I'm afraid she'll start not coming home and wandering further. She got hit by a car on the highway about a mile away this spring, and I don't want it happening again. That's why we got the fence! The neighbor then said he had wondered where she was for a few months.... Jeez.0 -

I'm pretty sure "a van down by the river" isn't a good home for a dog0 -

My mom & dad have the same problem with their neighbor, but they don't have an invisible fence...they just have a blind chow mix. Ugh. So frustrating. I'm glad they showed concern. I'm sorry the fence isn't working right! Luckily, we don't have 5 acres, but it is still $1100 for our yard. Looking forward to paying that! :noway:0 -

LOL I know you meant that, but I guess my response wasn't very clear that I understood you. Oops! Funny, though!0 -
We had an invisible fence for our lab and Yorkies when we lived in town. We had 1 acre. It only cost around $250 at Menards + some extra wire. We installed it ourselves. We used a gas powered edger to cut a trench and just put the wire in the trench. It was wonderful. We never really had any problems with it except that it don't keep other dogs out. The lab only ran through it once when my kids were in the road and the neighbor guy through my daughter over his shoulder and she squilled. The dog bit the bullet and took after him.0
