Hi. :)

I googled, but didn't find an answer.

I am currently exercising about 4x a day. It usually looks like this:

7AM walk outside or hike on gym machine (60 minutes)
11AM swim outside (30 minutes of lollygagging/ 30 minutes of laps and treading water)
3PM DVD at home (54 minutes of strength/50 minutes of Yoga or Centergy)
8PM walk outside (45 minutes to an hour)

I've been upping my exercise over the last few weeks. I haven't gotten any injuries. I'm 41, 5'4" tall, and 40 pounds overweight.

And I use a Polar HRM.

And I want to add bicycling...crazy!

Thoughts? :)

I used to do 2.5 hours of cardio and 30 mins of weights 6 days a week when I was 40 pounds overweight, It came off pretty quickly but I had to make sure I ate enough.

You can do multiple low intensity sessions each day. Just make sure to take a day off here and there if you start feeling tired when you wake up or get injured

I'm embarassed to admit that losing the weight and getting healthier has become like a part-time job! Thankfully, I have a pool within walking distance and walk outside lots and do DVDs so I don't have to drive to exercise. Except, now that I've added that gym cardio machine, I will be driving there 3x per week. Also, when it gets colder, I'll have to drive to swim and walk...

Edited to add: I started out walking 20 minutes every day beginning March 1st. Then I upped that to 30 minutes per day. I started really exercising more July 1st.

Just be sure you are eating enough. If your exercise is not high impact or high intensity, you can probably do that much. If, however, you are swimming fast laps for an hour and doing a hard aerobic DVD for an hour and walking two half hours (just making up an example), you might overdoing it. It depends on what you are doing and what sort of endurance you have built up over time.

    Good luck!

At least twice a week, I'm so tired I have to take a 2 to 3 hour nap. Does that mean anything? I have always been one who likes to sleep, though...

Good for you! If you wonder if it's too much, remember there are pros and amateur fitness people that work out hours a day. If you aren't feeling burned out, you're ok.

You just have to listen to your body. If it's really sore, take a day off or at least cut back on the exercise. If you're feeling good, keep going. Also be sure to eat enough since you're burning so much!

Sounds like a symptom of overtraining. Make sure you on your days off, you are not doing any type of exercise. And are you eating right?

Too much exercise is not good for the body, can cause problems such as low iron, leading to low haemoglobin levels, also lowers your white blood cell count (exercising) thus putting you at higher risk of infection. I guess it depends on the intensity of the exercise and how well you eat. Listen to your body and rest up when needed.

Jeez, I thought I worked out a lot. I do between 2 and 2 and a half hours a day. My hubby thinks it's excessive, but I get a lot of other things done too. I'd probably work out more if I didn't have kids, but I also need to be with them and keep my home in order. I do keep in mind that I don't want to do anything to crazy that I will not be able to maintain over time. I feel like it's similar to dieting in that, if you diet excessively, there is no way you can do it forever, and as soon as you cut back you will gain weight back.
  • Wow, I might have to try this! There's a path that follows a river and train tracks close by so I could go there and my apartment complex has a community pool so if I go early enough, I could be one of the few there. I thought I was working out enough for starting out, but this makes me want to do more! And as long as I eat right and enough, I think I should be able to. Same goes for you, if you eat right and enough then I don't see a problem with it... but I'm nothing close to an expert.

I really can't thank all of you enough! I will keep in mind that I need to eat enough calories and pay close attention to what my body is telling me. The latter is something I am very in tune with. So far, I'm enjoying all of the activity. My daily goal is to burn 500 calories by moving. As I've lost some weight, the amount of calories I'm burning for the same exercise/same time is going down.

Unfortunately, I don't know how many calories I burn while swimming. I 'can' wear my HRM in the pool, but if the chlorine level is too high, the electrodes can short (per Polar's website). Therefore, I'm estimating my calories burned as I swim breaststroke laps, bicycle in the water, practice freestyle, and tread water.

I will definitely keep on with tweaks here and there.

    Thanks again!!! :)

I log swimming as 'swimming, general' or leisurely.
I was thinking how lucky you are to have so much time to work out!

NORMALLY I would say this is extreme over-training, but since all of these (with the exception of the strength-training) are low-impact, low-cardio activities I would say you should be fine, just be careful not to overdo it because then you will start to get injuries.
