Was just wondering how accurate calories burned are on myfitnesspal.com are? Anyone have any idea???

I'm planning on getting a HRM, but probably will not be able to get it for at least a week or two.

Not very, they over and underestimate by quite a bit sometimes. But I used the site's estimations for 6 months before I got an HRM, you'll be fine for a couple of weeks. Just leave a cushion of 100 or so calories if you're worried.

All the calorie burn that is calculated where HR Rest/HR Max and VO2Max aren't imputed are not accurate. So this is a approximate value the same as most HRM's will be, although the HRM's will be more accurate then MFP. For the most part I find MFP reasonably accurate though.
  • It all really depends on what you are doing. I have a hrm, and when it comes to walking at a pace, its normally 20 within accurate. When I do things more intense it gets less accurate but normally on the low side. I dont each back all of my calories if I wasnt wearing hrm when I calculate it.

It depends on the person, but the estimates seem to be a little bit high for most people.

for me they are WAY over - I used to burn 800+ calories a day when I went by MFP estimates, but since I got a heart rate monitor I burn about 400+ - HRM are totally worth it but you should be fine using the ones on here until you can get one!

It looks pretty close to what treadmill at the gym shows,

I've found MFP to be fairly acurate. I do a Jazzercise class that says you burn up to 600 cals an hour, and on here its like 550 or something, so I think you'll be ok.

I have lost 20 pounds using only estimates from MFP and a few other sites for things they didn't have on here. I also almost always eat back all of my exercise calories. So, for me, I guess they are pretty accurate.

I think they are way over.... until I got an HRM I was estimating way too much.

PS If you get an HRM that only works by touch, thats probably going to be way off too.
Need one that you can program with v02 max, age, weight, gender etc to be the most accurate.

I just got a HRM a few days ago and MFP has been fairly accurate, although not exactly.

MFP was about half of what my Polar F11 says.

I'm not sure how accurate they are... but they often tally fairly closely with treadmill/Runkeeper so I tend to use whichever comes out lower.

I don't have an HRM and have managed to lose over 40 pounds without it, so don't stress if you can't afford one.
