As some of you know I went in for surgery last Friday, 11-7-08. Well, I came home on Sunday, a day or two too early but my kids needed me and let me tell you I ate hardly anything in the hospital due to severe nausea but was maintained on IV fluids, OMG OMG OMG I entered the hospital at 174 pounds and returned home at 187.5 WATER WEIGHT SUCKS BIG TIME!! And even now after being home for 4 days, still no appetite, plenty of pain and meds make me nauseous -- I am still at 184. I can't believe I entered the hospital, had a few organs removed and GAINED 13.5 pounds. Please tell me this is normal and all will be back to normal VERY soon. No exercise until after my 2 week check up on the 21st. HELP, I am really depressed. I am urinating almost hourly and you'd think all those female organs would have weighed atleast a pound... When will I get back on track?? HELP, HELP, HELP and thank you, thank you, thank you for listening to my whining!!:frown: :frown: :frown:

Sweetie, you are just experiencing inflammation! Your system is in shock and will retain fluid when injured. You shouldn't be concerned with your weight now--just rest and focus on proper nutrition. Remember that anything that was cut is now growing back together, and that uses up a TON of energy (calories). We all know it's not possible to gain 13 lbs of fat in a few days, so don't worry about it. Your weight will return to normal once your swelling goes down (and this swelling may not be visible on the outside of your body).

As the previous post said, you HAVE to really focus on proper nutrition right now so your body can heal properly & that 2 week check up will have you in the clear for exercising. It really is inflammation. Your body was invaded & not it is protecting itself. *hugs* It'll all come off again. Just give yourself some time & focus on taking good care of yourself, not what the scale says. You'll have plenty of time to worry about that once you're healed. :flowerforyou:

I was told by an RN it's called "third spacing". Your body goes into a shock mode and starts storing water like a camel in order to be prepared for the next big attack that may come.

It takes 2 to 3 weeks to get rid of that water, so RELAX. It's not real 'weight', you know?

I went into the hospital to have a hole in my stomach patched, wasn't allowed food or fluid except for IV while in for 4 or 5 days. I came out weighing 10lbs more than when I went in. I was DISGUSTED.

Within 3 weeks, it was gone. I was back to normal weight.

Don't stress this!!! Drink your fluids and eat your foods, and avoid the scales for a few weeks, if possible. You WILL return to normal!!!! I've been there. Hugs for you! Heal well, dear.

PS- Just noticed you said you are urinating hourly. That is your body slowing getting rid of that extra water. Take that as a good sign and keep replenishing your fluids. Try to eat as much as possible. It takes a lot of energy for the body to heal.

 Thanks eveyone!! It is really nice to know people care. I am REALLY not counting calories or anything like that right now. Exercise is out of the question because I'm not supposed to even pick up my baby because she weighs more than 10 pounds (HA try 24). Anyway, thanks again... I'll try to get back on track in a few weeks!
