A good workout?

What do you consider a good workout?

I went to the gym during lunch today and burned 300 calories (says my trusty HRM!) on the elliptical machine. But, I still feel like I didn't do much. I'm not totally satisfied with my workout.

I usually burn between 300-500 and the more I exercise, the more I feel the way you are! I think it's part of the "change" going on to this new lifestyle. I'm learning to love it and want more of it and that leaves me feeling like my effort hasn't been enough, but I know it is when I log it and see the big picture! You are probably doing just fine- your body will tell you in time.
  • One of the things I am learning is that a little resistance training is also good. I always used to focus on cardio, cardio, cardio But lean muscle burns calories even while at rest while fat just rides along for free. If you do a little of both you are losing fat and gaining muscle a great combo.

Your still young, but as you age I also understand resistance training helps build bone density.

I think clewliss is right. After I go to the gym on my lunch breaks, I think . . . wow, I really didn't do that much! I usually burn around 300 cals per session . . . more if I lift weights. But, the past two weeks I've stepped on the scale, I've been pleasantly surprised to find 2 lbs off each time!

Think about it. How many of you guys were sedentery before joining MFP?! The fact that you get in the gym (or you exercise at home) is a HUGE thing!! You're out there doing SOMETHING about your weight!! You are doing the biggest thing you can do for YOU. Keep it up. Even if you don't feel like it was that much in one session . . . they tend to add up.

When I work out, I'm not really looking at what I burned for calories. This is probably a throwback to when I was in sports, but for me, whether or not it was a good workout comes down to how hard did I work? If I worked hard, built up a good sweat and pushed as best I could without risking hurting myself, then it was a good workout.

That's what I mean...Considering I took a FULL week off from the gym, going during my lunch break is a great thing! And burning 300 calories instead of eating 300 calories-Even better! But, as nasty as it is, I love to be dripping sweat when I finish working out. I did break a sweat, that's for sure. Just wasn't sweaty enough! I'm going back to the gym (I hope!) after work for a Body Pump class...That'll be good.

Check out the beachbody products! They are all good and most people have a lot of success with them. They also come with nutrition plans and bands, etc. Slim in 6 is great, Hip hop abs is good if you are into dancing, and P90X is the most popular for ultimate fitness freaks, but it is a 3 month program so I wouldn't start it until after the holiday season so your schedule will be less likely to get interrupted. go to beachbody.com/ACMEfit and click on the store/shopping icon. If you join the club, you will get great discounts. Don't waste your time with the shakes, they're not good. ACMEfit
