Starvation mode

'Based on your total calories consumed for today, you are eating too few calories. Not only is it difficult to receive adequate nutrition at these calorie levels, but you could also be putting your body into starvation mode. Starvation mode lowers your metabolism and makes weight loss more difficult. We suggest increasing your calorie consumption to 1,200 calories per day minimum.'
Now - I was 15 calories under. I am NOT starving. I just want to say in light of the worldwide hunger crisis that I think this is offensive AND innaccurate. WE ARE NOT STARVING. I was FIFTEEN calories under 1200!! this is more calories than some ppl in somalia get in a week!
Ok that's all - just putting some perspective out there

15 calories is fine, unless you had a really large workout, say a 500 calorie burn. They I would say you should have a bit more.
Don't worry, they are just watching out for you!

I feel the same way - believe me but it is unhealthy to consistantly eat below 1,200 calories a day.0

It's not like MFP came up with the concept of "starvation zone" it's a medical fact - your metabolism will slow down and will start hording because it thinks it is starving. Don't hate the playa, hate the game! LOL0

"Starvation mode" is a scientific name for not eating enough. It doesn't mean that you may feel like you are starving but technically you are. It's not a big deal if it happens every once in a while but it really is bad for you to eat less than that on a regular basis.0 -
Exactly, starvation mode only really 'occurs' when you eat under 50% of your BMR & TDEE (I believe it's both) for a long period of time.0

relax==starvation mode as far as how it's being used in that "warning" message is not the same as actual starvation/world hunger.
it's just an automated message to remind you not to eat too far under your net daily calorie intake0 -

First of all 'Starvation Mode' is a really dumb name! But I am proof that chronically under eating slows down your metabolism. I spent years eating probably close to 1200 calories a week and as soon as I started eating somewhat normally again (not over eating) I gained a lot of weight and I gained it pretty quickly.
Although I don't believe you will go into 'Starvation Mode' by under eating one day, or for a week, or even for a month, if you do it long enough it can seriously damage your metabolism.
I actually wrote a blog about my theory on starvation mode not to long ago. (http://ellies-new-chapter.blogspot.com/2011/07/starvation-mode-and-eating-enough.html)0 -
Mine says that all the time. If I'm hungry, I eat a little more, if I'm not hungry I'm not going to eat. Listen to your body.0
