Okay... so I'm a teacher and will be heading back to work in the next week. I have plans to work out first thing in the morning.... BUT, I have a question about before/after eating.

I usually have a bowl of cheerios with skim milk and a banana as my breakfast. Do I eat this before I work out? Or after? Or should I eat a yogurt before I work out and then the cereal after?

Personally, I can't eat anything heavy before I work out. If it's a shorter workout (less than 30 min or a 3mi run) I just have my coffee, which I'm sure many would disagree with.

Longer workout or long run days I try to get carbs and protien as a snack pre workout and my real breakfast post workout. Before a long run I often have a multigrain waffle with 1/4c. greek yogurt on it or 1/4c cottage cheese with 1/4c fruit or a piece of toast or banana with nut butter.

Snack before, high protein/low carb after.

my college fitness and walking professor told me just today, that a high protien low carb option is best in the morning. I like to eat a yougurt first thing in the morning, then a bit more after my workout.
  • My personal trainer made me eat a banana 15 mins before exercising for the first month of exercising. (I had never exercised before). After the first month when my body was more used to exercising, I had to stop eating before exercising and have my breakfast (high carb) within 1 hour after workout. If you eat before workout your body is trying to eat the carbs that you just ate, rather than eating away at the fat you have stored.

I have to eat something before I work out. I've read that you are not suppose to eat before, but I've tried that and almost passed out.

I usually eat steel cut oatmeal or cereal or one egg and toast. Seems to be light enough for me.
