While at the store yesterday checking out the raw almonds and other various nuts and such I noticed raw spanish peanuts. They seem to have a lot of the same nutritional benefits of almonds at quite a drop in price. 12oz of Almonds was $6 and 32oz of Spanish Peanuts were only $4.

Both offered 3g Dietary Fiber, 6g Protien, 160 Calories, 14-15g Fat, 1-2mg of Sodium and 0 Cholesterol.

I honestly don't remember any of the other nutrient info like vitamins and such...

Anyhow as you can see they're quite similar.

My Question is, does anyone know any reason I shouldn't consider the spanish peanuts as a viable alternative to almonds? If you answer please explain your answer.

(PS - I know peanuts technically aren't nuts)

I don't think they have the same healthy fat content as almonds, but I do know that walnuts are the best nuts to eat. They have higher levels of healthy fats.
  • I would say that the reason people say almonds would be a better choice, is because peanuts are grown in the ground, therefore, can contain mold. And I know that in factories that produce peanut butter they where masks to prevent the aflotoxins from causing cancer.

I know that many people love peanuts over the almonds and almond butters. I personally like both, I didn't know there are organic bulk spanish peanuts. Funny I saw this post, because I was just reading about FitNutz, which is a powdered peanut butter. Anyhow, I thought to myself, I wonder if I could just make some of that, and wondered how I can get organic peanuts. God provides~

    Hope that helps

Also there is a some info at this site. http://healthnut-em.blogspot.com/2010/01/peanuts-vs-almonds.html
  • I thought this link was nice and brief, cutting to the point. The lay out the different benefits of varieties of nuts, but concentrate on cholesterol lower effects. The problem is, there is not a comprehensive study of comparing nut species. All studies that are done are funded by growers.

In case you were wondering about the cholesterol issue:
In a nutshell, *snicker*, "ounce for ounce, walnuts, peanuts, and pistachios are equally effective" at lowering cholesterol.

IMO, raw peanuts don't taste nearly as good as raw almonds or walnuts.
