Ankle injury!!

A few years back I severely sprained (or possibly even fractured) my ankle and it has never fully healed from that injury...so even today it's weak and most of the time it gets sore when I exercise, like if I'm walking on an incline or running. How can I work out without having to put too much pressure on my ankle? And would it be a good or bad idea to work out with an ankle brace on? I was thinking of getting one from CVS or something

Thank you :)

I've got the same issue. Bad sprain from 2 years ago that isn't healing. Doctors/PT are little to no help. I didn't find a brace that helped me. I just take tyelnol now for the pain and aches. Curious what others do.
  • I have problems with my cartlilage in both knees which can give me immense pain, which prevents me doing heavy impact workouts like running, step aerobics etc, as directed by the doctor in the fracture clinic.
I spoke to my gym instructors and got multi advice from them and my physio that I should keep my thigh muscles and glutes strong to keep pressure off my knee and I should have less problems. I work out for hard cardio in spinning classes, which are low impact for you but an amazing calorie burn, and tone legs and bum. I also do Body Combat, which has some impact but I do low impact versions.
Get some advice from Doctor, Physio etc for expert advice on what will help and what will hurt, as I did and you will find plenty of exercise you can do without the pain. I hiked 12 miles and got to the top of Helvellyn in the Lake District at the weekend, which is the 3rd highest peak in England, with no problem.
    Good Luck!

Broke my ankle in two places (March 2011) and the doctor said its healed and the physical therapist says its weak, BUT even though it swells and gets sore, the more I exercise the stronger it feels!
I usually put my ankle up whenever I can.
I'm so tired of meds and ice packs but on some days they really help.
I'm thinking about an ankle brace next or even those surgery knee highs. (suggested by the Orthopaedic Doc)

Nothing will stop my progress .. not even my own body!

I have the same problem!! Def get a brace. ace makes a good soft brace that u pull over your foot on to your ankle. it will give it some support & feels better. It will strengthen it w/o the strain. I would go see a dr if possible.

Are you sure that your pain is lingering from your ankle sprain/fracture? I have chronic achilles tendonitis and my pain is always in my ankles (generally when I push myself running).

When my tendonitis flares up, my orthopedic surgeon puts me on physical therapy of no running, ice, massage, and eccentric calf raise exercises (you can see a youtube demo of them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJPfzTHpbAM&feature=related)

Generally, after a few weeks of this therapy, I am back to running pain free.

But again, this is treatment for chronic achilles tendonitis and may not be what you have. You may want to see a doctor if it does not get better.

    Good luck!
