With football season right around the corner, does anyone have any healthy food ideas for tailgate parties?

My first thought was, "is there such a thing?" But perhaps a light salsa without cheese or sour cream. Or something with avocado. And baked chips, perhaps. Or a fruit/veggie platter. I dunno. If I'm tailgating, I wanna go all out so I build in the cheating. Good luck!
  • You could try air popped popcorn (not microwaved) with some light salt and butter spray.
Also, we had someone bring veges cut up in a little plastic Dixie cup (bathroom size) w/ a small amt of ranch in the bottom. Convienent and portion controlled dip!
Turkey wrapped around apples/cheese (no tortilla involved).

can do chicken tenders as wings or use ground turkey and make meatballs that you can season like wings. You can turkey sausages, or bocca burgers, humas, baked pita chips, salsa, can make roasted veggie sandwhiches, etc.

I love fresh black bean salsa (black beens, fresh tomatoes, cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper) with Guiltless Gourmet baked blue tortilla chips. So good :)

Thank the Lord for the return of football! Great question. Fist I build in a higher calorie day into the cycle around the event...mostly because of the alcohol. (but if I call it a cheat day it can get out of control) I consume less in the morning and I factor in the bulk of my calories around the back of the truck. Choose healthy delicious foods and have them ready to take along. If you rely on what's available it will be a delicous but impactful day. Think of foods you associate with tailgating and find a healthy version to bring (there is usally a healthy alternative). An example: I love hot wings in that cicumstance, so I get chicken tenders and prepare them with a dry rub the day before. Grill them on a stick - what's not better on a stick? - and you have a fantastic, healthy, portable food to socialize with. Celery is the perfect delivery platform for many healthy alternatives like crab salad or a little nut butter - and very filling. Football season is mostly hot in Az so it's easy to put down volumes water as I go, I alternate 1 for 1 with alcohol.

Basically I try t keep the food protien and veggies, assuming more than enough carbs will come from booze. If you come with any other great ideas please shoot them over to me!

    GUACAMOLE, a real winner!

    3 avacados, peeled & pitted
    1 lime, juiced (about 3 T. juice)
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. minced sweet onion
    3 T. chopped fresh cilantro (or 1 1/2 T. dried)
    2 roma tomatoes, chopped (about 1/2 c.)
    1 tsp. minced garlic
    1 pinch cayenne pepper

Mash all together with a potato masher until desired chunkiness, or, if preferred smooth, puree in food processor.

Eat with toasted pita wedges or corn chips.

I try to always bring something on the lighter end of things. Usually, I have a salad of some sort that I've made somewhat light. We've ended up being the main course bringer on Chili Day, and I bring either chicken or turkey chili with a lot of vegetables and beans.

I try to watch my portion sizes. I know I'm going to eat a lot of calories, but it's not so bad if I make sure to only take small scoops of lighter things. And I'm lucky that most of the people I tailgate with bring stuff that's not too bad (with the exception of dessert) so that helps, too. There's almost always a veggie tray.

First thing that came to my mind was what I had for supper lastnight. Might be a little pricey but hey what in the heck isn't when you take in to count all the ingredients it takes to put together a recipe? Peel and Eat Shrimp.

    Definately a veggie tray!!

Peal and eat shrimp shows up at at least one game every season anymore. Just pay attention for it to go on sale. (Personally, not something I enjoy, but it's a really big hit.

Woohoo!! Only about 30 days until college football starts!!!

We are having a big party for the first bama game. I plan on doing:

Grilled chicken wings (I remove the skin on mine)
Carrot, cucumber, celery sticks with dip
    Fruit
    Chips N salsa
    Cupcakes!!!

Others will bring stuff though I have a feeling it will certainly NOT be healthy. I plan on running and doing whatever other exercise hubby and I are partaking in that day so I can indulge a little.

Ooh! Grilled chicken wings sans skin is a good one I hadn't thought about for when we need to bring a "filling appetizer" because we can make them ahead of time. Depending on how they're flavored, they can be great cold.

Hungry Girl had this recipe for meatballs today! Sounds Delishious!!!

    Fruity & Tangy Cocktail Meatballs
    PER SERVING (1/8th of recipe, 3 meatballs with about 2 tbsp. sauce): 135 calories, 2.5g fat, 191mg sodium, 15g carbs, 0.5g fiber, 14g sugars, 12g protein -- PointsPlus® value 3*

We got a li'l crazy with these mango-infused meatballs. They require a bit of oven lovin' before you toss 'em in the crock pot, but the results are worth the effort. (PROMISE!) Great for parties!

    Ingredients:
    Meatballs
1 lb. raw extra-lean ground beef
    1/2 cup finely diced mango
    2 tbsp. ketchup
    1 tsp. dried minced onion
    1/4 tsp. salt

    Sauce
One 15-oz. can peach slices in juice
    1/2 cup sugar-free or low-sugar apricot preserves
    1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp. Sriracha hot chili sauce

    Directions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients. Mix thoroughly with your hands. (Don't be squeamish -- it's the easiest way!) Form 24 evenly sized meatballs from the mixture and place them evenly on the baking sheet.

Bake in the oven until meatballs are just cooked, 8 - 10 minutes. Meanwhile, drain peaches and transfer to a blender or food processor. Pulse until mostly smooth. Transfer to a crock pot. Add all remaining sauce ingredients to the crock pot and mix well.

Carefully transfer meatballs to the crock pot. Stir to coat. Cover and cook on low for 3 - 4 hours.

Stir well and serve up meatballs with toothpicks and the extra sauce from the crock pot!

    MAKES 8 SERVINGS

We just did some tailgating at a car race this weekend and it was great. We had:

    - chicken salad made w/low fat miracle whip, craisens, green onions and celery (1c, 80 cal)
    - fruit salad
    - bugles (you can have a bunch for very low calories
    - fat free ranch dip for bugles
    - and explosion jello salad (fat free cool whip, sugar free raspberry jello, raspberries, bananas)

We were full and managed to almost stay in my calories for the day. Not bad considering the rest of the day was track food. It was painful, but I logged it all. LOL

Good luck and have fun with the partying!

I hear you! It gets out of control quickly for me too. Often times when the group is making hot dogs I will bring turkey smoked sausage. This year I think I'm going to bring turkey chili too. I just bought a smoker and I may take some smoked chicken or turkey that I've made the day before and just warm it up on the grill in the parking lot. Good advice to stay with protein & low cal. veggies.
