How to get more exercise than planned. True story:)

This happened to me, partially b/c I tried to do the right thing and partially b/c I can be somewhat naive.
So I had completed my morning run by 7:30 this morning, some 13 k in about 65 minutes and felt pretty satisfied with myself. Get home, some breakfast.. the day is looking good.
Soon of course, Jake, our dog is looking me with his soulful eyes, wondering what plans I might have for him. Now I have been taking him to our dog park regularly, letting him cruise around a bit and then walking home. But today, the day was not yet unbearably hot, energy levels high and I figure I give him a special treat.. take him to the nature area (which I had not been at since early MaY).. the woods, a bubbling creek, fields, lots of trails, deer, porcupine, hares to sniff out, lots of trees, and best part he gets lots of running done while I get to listen to my podcasts, enjoy the sun, scenery and not need to worry about picking up his poop:) (which he will leave discretely in the woods somewhere).
We arrive, he is excited, me in my shorts and t-shirt, fingershoes on, ready to do a 1 hour brisk walk (plus more to log on mpf and maybe eat an extra something later:).
A few meters in I realize I had forgotten some old companions, the proboscis-sporting, hemoglobin-demanding dipterians, colloquial known as mosquitoes, who were even more excited to see me. Ok, can't around now, too stubborn and promised Jake some freedom and exploration. So, I walk a little faster, swing the arms some more (good thing my arms are hairy too, tough for them to settle:)). But the buzzing increases and soon I feel some dive bombing occuring on my head. In turns, the mosquitoes are joined now by hordes of deer flies who been waiting in the grass for a shorts wearing, no protection having fool like myself to show up.
I can take a hint as well as the next guy, so I pick up the pace some more, still no escape and so, within about 5 minutes in I find myself running down the trails at high speed... arms pumping, swatting at little blood suckers gunning for my scalp...go Earl, run run...all the while Jake happily jogging along (he too is swarmed by deer flies, but luckily unable to settle on his body).
So here I am jumping over logs, bending under branches, flying over puddles, sweat dripping, with grass and herbs stuck between the toes of my finger shoes.. I ain't stopping until parking lot in view. Ah there is is. quick check on my watch and I am thinking: " Well you certainly did not plan for this extra exercise but another 6 k in 30 minutes.. all right,, must make sure to log that too:)" Second thought: "Sorry Jake, we are not coming back here until the fall and little things have died". Life is good.
P.S. I ended up with only a single big bump on the scalp where some lucky blood sucker succeeded, probably an athletic mosquito:). Jake nicely fatigued (he is not much of a long distance runner as he gets older) and I feel great. So when next you need to challenge yourself... Find some mosquito/deer fly infested place.... You know what to do:) Be well.

I'm familiar with that emotion! I live in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and the deerflies attack my car as soon as I pull into the driveway. I've had a swarm follow my car (and keep up) for 1/4 mile down the road. This is part of the reason I'm such a sucky runner: I can't go outside from April to October!0

Laughed hard, but it’s easier to laugh when it’s someone else's story. This year I had about four weeks of terror on my trail runs due to horseflies. I've run the same trail for years and never had it this bad. The nasty things buzzed me and bit me en masse for the entire length of my 3x a week 5 mile runs. I flailed at them, sped up, and almost jumped into the river to get away. I'd much rather just read your humorous story than experience my own. Good job!0
