BUMP????

I've noticed that a lot of people are using the word "bump" on these forums. What exactly does it mean? Is it an american thing or what?

It's a way to bookmark the topic so that you can re-visit later.

I think the original usage was from when people would "bump" a topic to the top of the list so that it was highly visible. For example: if the information was interesting, or if the original poster wanted to refresh the topic for responses.

However, it appears to be more widely used in this forum as a way for people to "bookmark" the thread for further reference.

I think it is so the thread will receive more answers and it bumps it to the top of the list as to not get lost.

To me, it seems to be a way that people push a topic/thread back to the top in hopes of it being read/commented on.

This is correct. It moves it back to the top so it (hopefully) gets more attention.
