Hi guys, just wondering why pilates and yoga are in the cardio section of our fitness trackers.... i didn't think yoga was a type of cardio. i did a biggest loser cardio workout yesterday and yoga for flexibility and winsor pilates today. I really don't think i could've burnt off 300 + cals from doing 80 mins of pilates and yoga! I am buying one of those calorie counter watch things but i was just interested to see what others have to say bout this

I think it depends on the instructor and/or the style. I do Bikram with a hrm on and tend to burn 550ish per 90 min.

    Hi,

I do yoga at a yoga studio about 5 times a week. I sweat like crazy, but I know that I'm not getting a full "cardio" workout. I think it really depends on what kind of yoga you're doing. I believe I'm getting the lower end of my cardio (for heartrate) because it kicks my butt some days.

On MFP, under exercise I type in yoga. When I put in 60 min., it says I've burned 136 calories. I played with it and entered in 80 min. and it said 181 calories. I think that this is more accurate than the 300+

I think the MFP setting is Not based on weight, I think it's a general statistic. The only sure way to tell like you mentioned is getting a heart rate monitor for the type of yoga/pilates you do.
  • If you're working your muscles you're burning calories.

I would expect Pilates to burn more than Yoga as its more...active... shall we say. Pilates is like aerobics without the running and jumping about. I can hurt for a week after an hours class! You might not get your heart rate as high but you definitely burned cals!

I did 45 mins of yoga the other day and I logged 175 cals. I dont think 300 plus sounds right.
  • thanks everyone, i know i'm burning heaps of cals while doing my pilates but i think the yoga is a diff story. i've ordered my cal watch so i'll b able to know exactly what i'm burning. the yoga i do is to stretch n flex my body. there are so many types of yoga that it's hard to judge. but i am thinking of trying Bikram i've been told that just about kills u!
