Hi,

So i'm wondering something. I have a little-ish waist and quite the large hips.....My body shape is pretty much, small top, big hips, big thighs, ok bum....i hate the difference in them at times, wearing dress's just doesnt look pretty with a wide load, lol... but hey, i gots the old polish genes, curves galore in my family, lol....Anyway, i'm wondering how hard it is to get hip sizes down? What kind of exercises would be good for that area? And also, i have just got Zumba on wii tonight. Will Zumba help the hips? you know, with all the shaking and that? :-)

You might do well with exercises that lengthen the muscles, like yoga and pilates. Zumba and other cardio will help burn fat all over your body (and if your body accumulates fat in that area, that might be the last to go, but keep at it!), but yoga and pilates will help strengthen the muscles without bulking them up.

Actually, you can not "lengthen muscles," you are the height you are, and your muscles are the the length they are, and your muscles are the shape that they are. You are an apple like me (I have those good child baring hips that i inherited from my German ancestors). Additionally, weight training strengthens muscles, and you would be pretty hard pressed to "bulk them up" without the assistance of hormone therapy or 6 hours in the gym per day. Cardio will help you get there, some sort of strength training will help you get there (does not have to be weight lifting, it's amazing how far you can go with just body weight work like squats, lunges, push ups, etc), yoga and pilates are great workouts. You'll lose fat from the outside in with your waist, hips, and thighs last. Stick with it and you'll see results, it just takes time. I used to do squats and lunges while I brushed my teeth (3 minutes of squats in the morning, 1.5 minutes of lunges each side at night). Try some calisthenics maybe? The fact is that strength training has a longer burn than cardio, and cardio burns a lot quickly, so mix it up between the two.

I guess that explains my shape. I got the double wammy - Polish AND German genes!! It does seem at times that my hips are wider than my shoulders and it is hard to balance things out unless you're covering your midsection with something very loose. It's very misleading too as people thing I'm larger than I am b/c of the shape top I wear to minimize the hips.

oh tell me about it, lol.....i have so much trouble with long dresses. I look so short & plumpy with hips that should carry a wide-load sign, lolol......And all i wanna do is wear a nice long summer dress & not look tent-ish in it....The Aussie summers are too hot for leggings and a sloppy shirt all the time.
Good luck to you on your journey though, may we beat the genes! lol
