What is clean eating?

"In a nutshell, eating clean is the practice of eating whole, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. It also means staying away from the junk that typically makes up the Standard American Diet (S.A.D) These types of food include man-made sugar, bad fats (hydrogenated, trans-fat), preservatives, white bread, and any other ingredients that are unnecessary. An easy way to remember if a food is clean is: “if man made it, don’t eat it.”

A person that eats clean generally practices the following:

* Eliminates refined sugar
* Cooks healthy meals
* Packs healthy meals
* Makes healthy choices when dining out
* Drinks a lot of water
* Eats 5-6 small meals per day
* Combines healthy proteins with complex carbohydrates at every meal, which provides a feeling of fullness.
* Eliminates alcoholic beverages (or significantly limits it)
* Always eats breakfast."

    I am experiencing a major revelation today, day four of clean eating. All this time, I have thought that a few extra pounds were making me feel sluggish, but even with most of the weight still on, I have my energy back already! This is what I remember about feeling good. It wasn't the weight, it was what I was eating! It was my diet. I feel amazing. There's no turning back now.

    So I'd like to start sharing a recipe or food tip every day. I have subscribed to Clean Eating magazine, but I won't get my first issue for possibly several weeks. I have Tosca Reno's book, but I loaned it to someone months ago when I thought "I'll never actually eat like this." Now I'm realizing that I really have no choice if I want to feel as good as I can possibly feel.

    I feel leaner already. I wasn't embarrassed to be seen in my workout clothes this morning. I feel like I could go out and run ten miles today. (Of course, I really couldn't, yet.) I am completely convinced and converted to this way of eating. :bigsmile:

    I'll see what I can find for recipes and try to post one later today.

    Joy and smiles to my fellow clean eaters out there.

    Even though our weight can weigh us down (pun intended haha) it all comes down to what we eat. I eat clean probably about 90% of the week.. I can sure tell the difference when I dont... You feel tired, unmotivated and just all gross hahaha

    I feel crappy when I eat junk, not just a little taste mind you, but the mindless eating of chips, and cookies, etc. I don't sleep well and perspire a ton, I notice that when I get back on track and eliminate the junk, within a day or two I'm back to my old (less sweaty) self.

    Yes, it's amazing how great you feel when eating clean!! I find when I eat something processed or even eating out a restaurant trying to eat healthy, there is SO much hidden sodium and processing in the food!!

    Here's my day today:

    7:00:
    Banana,
    1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder in my coffee

    Did a 30 min kickbox, 30 min heavy leg + ab workout.

    Breakfast: (10:00, post workout)
    3/4 c. multi grain Quaker hot cereal cooked w/ 1/2 c. whole cranberries (not dried)
    1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
    1 T. NM PB, 1 T. flax, 1 T. wheat germ
    1/2 c. cottage cheese

    Jess, did you by any chance do a Cathe Friedrich workout (4-Day Split)?

    Is that breakfast all mixed together? Cottage cheese and peanut butter in your oatmeal? Sorry, it's going to take me a while to get used to these combinations. :)

    Oh my gosh, yes!! :laugh: I haven't done that one in a while, I love the kickbox and have done that one a lot, but I think only the leg part maybe once?? I enjoyed it!

    I know, it sounds weird. But I love the combo, the PB in oatmeal is yummy and the cott. cheese makes it so creamy. Don't feel like you have to try out my foods, find something you like! :laugh:

    Here's what I've eaten so far today:

    Breakfast:
    Oatmeal with apple and cashews

    Lunch:
    Cheese Ravioli, 4 pcs.
    Gnocchi, 42.5 g
    Fat Free Pasta Sauce, 1/4 cup

    Snack:
    Whole Grain Tortilla
    Peanut Butter, 1 Tbs
    Barley Coffee with half and half and maple syrup

    Not all clean, I know. I'm having the same problem today that I had yesterday. I ate a late breakfast because I didn't eat until after my workout, so that is one less snack that I've eaten today. I have over 700 cals left and it's going on 5:00. I'm not hungry! This is exactly opposite to what I'm used to -- wanting to eat all the time and feeling like I'm starving, more emotionally sometimes than physically. I'm not having the emotional or the physical cravings. When I do eat, I'm even doing so a little bit out of obligation sometimes, rather than out of hunger.

    Weird. :huh: :smile:

    That's what I love about clean eating. It seems that the whole foods are more filling and as soon as I start eating the non-clean stuff I get constant cravings! Glad that it's working for you!

    I made one of your protein pancakes for dinner, Jess. It was good! Although it was more like protein mush because it stuck to the pan. :tongue: I couldn't believe how BIG it was, and only a couple hundred calories.

    My 9yo daughter made me a delicious fruit icee to go with it. The recipe (for two servings):

    about 2 cups frozen berry medley
    about 1/2 cup 1% milk
    Put in blender for a soft ice cream consistency. Yum!

    I still have over 200 calories left for my day. I think I'm really going to have to challenge myself to eat all my calories! I much prefer this, though, to struggling not to over eat.

    Yeah, if you make one big pancake it's huge! I tend to make them into smaller pancakes, about 4 of them. For less than 300 cals, you can't beat it! :wink:

    My girls love making smoothies, we make them for snacks. I use berries or a banana, milk or yogurt, a T. ground flax (I add flax to a lot of stuff, my kids never notice!).

    That's a good problem to have. :tongue:
