shocking amount of calories!

HI All,

I occasionally eat at Moe's Southwest Grill so I just looked at their nutritional values. I usually eat the Close Talker salad, if you include the fried tortilla bowl that salad is almost 900 calories! So you think you are being good and having a salad but wow, 900 calories! If you remove the bowl completely it takes it down to about 500, which is still a big chunk of daily calories for a salad!

I am new to this site and just started tracking so I guess I am learning about how quickly calories can add up and how high some foods are....it is a learning experience every day!

Lucky for us in this day and age of the internet nutritional info is pretty easy to come by.

Yes! Salads at restaurants are often NOT the healthiest thing. You could have a burger for that much (and I often do)!

    My rules for restaurant salads:
#1- Dressing on the side, please!

    #2a- No cheese (unless it's feta/goat cheese....yum) OR

#2b- No croutons/crunchy bits (Let's face it...you have to have cheese or crunchies. Maybe no both, but one or the other to make this salad more than a big old pile of leaves would be nice!)

#3- No red meat based salads, it's just not worth it

#4- Ask them to go easy on the dried fruit/nuts

Rules #1 and #2a/#2b are salad rules to live by. Dressing on the side, ask to cut out at least one high calorie embellishment.

And, of course, continue avoiding taco shell dishes!

(PS-- I dip my fork in the dressing, as opposed to dipping the leaf or pouring it on. You get dressing on every bite that way and use a lot less.)

This may be a little extreme, but I don't eat out before pre-planning choices on MFP/Sparkpeople.
I will look up common dishes from the place (Indian, Thai, ect.) to conclude what I can have, and then I'm already set once I get there.

Yeah, I'm basically not dining out at all for now, unless it's on my "day off". I even turned down a vegetarian place I love today which I know has very healthy food because they didn't have the nutritional information for their menu.
