Did the Insanity fit test today. I was SO frustrated by the pushup jacks (not sure the exact name). I just got done doing the 30 Day Shred.Which I thought would help me with doing them. I can do girl pushups NO problem. But doing the regular pushups. I can do only a couple correctly.
My upper body is really weak. How can I build these up so I can do pushups?? Since I can't build them up doing pushups?

Do as many as you can, and then do as many as you can on your knees. Hold the plank form though to strengthen core still. Wide, regular and diamond pushups. Three sets of each. Only way to get better with pushups is to do them.

Try the hundred push up challenge. It worked wonders for me. I highly recommend it. And the above poster is right. The only way to get better is to do them.

Get off your knees. In pushups your core should be engaged. "Girl" pushups reduce that. If you can't do them parallel to the floor start at an angle; off the kitchen counter, go lower with a stable chair, lower still with a sturdy box/chest, until you can do "regular" pushups.

I don't know anything about 30DS, but there's a program called Hundred Pushup Challenge (google it) and it's a 6 wk program to get you to be able to do 100 consecutive pushups. I went all the way through week 5 doing girlies, and then went on vacation. My intention is to build up the muscles to do 100 girlies, and then switch to regular. But I can already do WAY more regular ones now than before.
  • Totally agree, I started P90X being only able to do 5 or 6 of each, I finished and am on my second go round and can do 30 of each, so keep doing them it'll get better.
  • bench press. start with just the bar (45lbs) and work your way up.

30 Day Shred really doesn't prepare you for push-ups at the speed that you do them in Insanity. Do them slower or/and do them on your knees. After the workout or alternate days work on your push-ups. There is no magic behind them, you just gotta practice to get stronger.

I would say keep doing insanity.. when i first started i know i couldn't do that many regular push up and surely couldn't do a push up jack. At the end of insanity I was SOOO pumped to do them I think I was close to 20 !
