I'm contemplating starting P90X (a friend gave me the DVDs), but I am planning on training for a 1/2 marathon starting the first week of September. Anyone done this before? And advice on what I should do?

P90X is a huge commitment. You may want to wait until after the marathon. Just my two cents.

Depending on how much time you have. I've trained for the full last year while doing p90x and right now training for a half. I start the program on a Monday, do the DVD in the am and then run either on the treadmill or outside in the pm. Sunday is my rest day. I only run on mon wed and sat right now then will throw in a thurs run every now and then.
Hope that helps. It's working for me. Good luck with the half.
  • I think it is possible to use P90X as a cross-training activity during your training. I have used it as well as Insanity, Asylum and TurboFire as part of my plan. My suggestion would be to focus on the upper body and core workouts and skip the leg workouts as you'll already be using them quite a bit. I've run numerous marathons and halves and have benefited from having a strong core and upper body. You have to listen to your body and cut back if it's too much.

There is a blog I follow from a girl who used P90X to improve her speed in marathon running.... My absolute favorite blog (kept me motivated because we did our first round at the same time). its at www.fitnessfatale.com. Look back at some of the older posts for her journey/training. She is amazing and has recently gotten into triathalons.

Keep in mind, with P90X.. you ARE going to be aching and sore!

If you have other commitments and question the time you have... wait!

P90X is the best things I have ever done for my health, but I was basically pushing myself so hard I was in pain for 3 months straight! AND I LOVED every minute of it.

Love, love, love P90X.., I just wish I had more time so I can do it. You need an hour to an hour & a half to complete it. (I run too.)
