Staving off hunger

Options
How do you guys cope with being hungry? I don't seem to very well and need to eat almost constantly. I drink ALOT of water (about 14cups a day and then my tea...) I dont have a large intestine so i go to the bathroom a lot more than other people, i dont know if that makes a difference.
I just get very skittish, chew my nails, cant stop moving if i feel hungry which at the moment feels like about an hour after i've had my breakfast. I haven't been logging my food recently because i've been struggling so much but my usual diary would look like
Breakfast: Oatmeal and raisins, green tea, piece of fruit
Snack: banana
Lunch: tuna/egg salad or soup and crackers, piece of fruit
Snack: peanutbutter and an apple
Dinner: vegetables , some form of fish/chicken and brown rice/quinoa or potatoes

When i exercise i burn approx 200cals, i dont have the energy for much more.
Help?? :frown:

Your usual meals sound extremely healthy, but personally I couldn't do it. I think that's probably why you're so hungry. You need to add some substance! GIve in once in awhile. While it's great to eat like that, sometimes you just crave a whole lot more and it just won't satisfy you. So when you're feeling hungry, EAT!

You will get more and more used to exercise where you can burn more calories. Thats key in this. But, to get rid of the hunger longer, you should increase your protein, it keeps you more full, longer.

Also, you should open up your diary so we can see the whole picture.

why not try substituting your fruit with veg for a while and see how that goes, especially the apple cos i find they build up hunger in most people. opt for carrot sticks or celery and hummus or cottage cheese.

Or why not get a protein bar as a snack. protein will keep you fuller for longer than carbs.

What is your daily calorie allowance?

Do you eat all your calories?

Do you eat back exercise calories?

You shouldn't have to stave off hunger - sounds like you may be undereating OP :-(

First, 200 cals through exercise is not a bad burn. Don't get down about that. :) Looking at your profile it seems like you've made amazing progress so far.

Second, your intestine may be contributing to the problem, but that's something you'd need to discuss with your doctor. Most of us here can't speak to that issue, and keep in mind that some of the suggestions you receive here might not be the healthiest thing for your specific needs.

But I would suggest trying to eat more protein and fiber. Those will help fill you up for longer. And if you're legitimately hungry, eat! Try eating a larger breakfast that's heavy on protein, then have frequent smaller meals through the day. And I agree with not drinking so much water. You don't need that much unless you're sweating a lot. Drink enough so that your urine is clear, and that's enough. If you're using it as a way to keep hunger at bay, that's one thing, but it's not something you need to strive for otherwise.

You dont have to "give in" to get substance. If you can eat salads make yourself a big salad. I eat a salad at least twice a day. it gives you bulk without a bunch of calories. You might try also eating more protein. It will give you energy and make you feel fuller. Another thing would be a protein shake. I use one scoop of protein powder, 2tbsp PB2(powedered peanut butter) a cup of water and then the cup im drinking out of about 3/4 full of crushed ice. I put it in the blender and make a shake and drink it on the way to work. Fills me up good. You can also add 1/2 banana if you want. yummy.

My diary is open if you want any ideas.
Oh and I sometimes eat what they call eat-rite deep dish pizza that are low sodium/fat/calories and they are filling and stick with me for hours!

Are you hitting at least 1200 calories per day? What you can is add some protein to your diet in the morning. Maybe some egg whites or a protein shake? What time of the day are you most hungry? Maybe have your potato or brown rice lunch lunch instead of dinner? Switching up when you take in your carbs may help.

Oh no, i made myself sound like a bit of a lunatic. I am aiming to lose 1lb a week and am on 1530 cals, i eat back my exercise cals. I do give in and eat chocolate or chips or bread or whatever if i have the calories for it (and im not over on sodium!) but i feel ravenous all the time. As if i havent eaten sometimes, as quickly as 30minutes which bothers me alot. I understand being hungry is your body demonstrating that your body needs fuel, i just dont expect to feel like i havent eaten for days when i have just had a big dinner!

I also have to drink a lot of water because of my general lack of innards, it is your large intestine which absorbs the water and it is very easy for me to be dehydrated. Im also not supposed to eat a lot of fiber with the tablets i have to take. I'm generally a bit confused!

Thank you for all your advice! I am definately going to go and do some proteing powder googling!

When I'm hungry I eat. In fact, I try very hard to actually not let myself get really hungry. I've gone from thinking I have to have 3 set meals a day to just eating when I start feeling hungry, and that is usually more than 3 times a day. For example, on a normal day I get up early (around 5 a.m.) and drink my morning coffee and eat a granola bar. Then around 6:30 or 7 I go out and walk, usually for an hour or more. I come back in and fix my second breakfast, lol, usually a scrambled egg on a whole wheat thin bun alongside a piece of fruit, and drink some water. I eat again at lunchtime, and then again around 4:30. (What I have then depends on what I got in my fruit/vegetable delivery that week, or if I'm at home or out somewhere. I try to make healthy choices wherever I am, make it a point to get a good protein in there somewhere and drink water as my beverage.) Then at night I usually have some greek yogurt and sometimes a spoonful of peanut butter, because believe it or not, now that I'm in maintenance I have to make sure to get enough calories in or my weight eases down again. It's been a process, but I find eating this way makes me feel a lot better than getting hungry and wanting to overeat when mealtime rolls around. And I have a whole new appreciation for fresh food -- I try to keep some kind of fruit available all the time.

if you are too hungry on 1200 cals, eat more! this is supposed to be a lifestyle change, and to me being hungry constantly doesnt sound like a fun lifestyle! you have to find what works for you and will work long term.

I don't think you sounded like a lunatic, we just didn't have enough info. :)

I think the protein powder will help you a great deal. I know that when I drink a protein shake, it's very filling and energizing. How much fiber are you allowed to have each day? I was shocked at how little fiber is actually in a salad. When you use iceberg lettuce or even spinach, there's not nearly as much fiber as I would have thought. So that might be an option to keep you full without having too many cals or too much fiber.

Just a thought - but have you spoken to your Dr about your diet? Could it be that you have trouble absorbing food as well as water?

I'd go back to the Dr's hun, as you have a pre-existing medical condition maybe your GP can give you some advice?

It doesn't seem right (tome at least and I know I am not an expert) to feel ravenous after eating?

If you are going to do this you may as well make sure you are doing it 'properly' and seek some advice from the professionals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely if you have no large intestine, your food absorption will also be severely affected. I don't know much about this area so I could be wrong. I am not sure whether the majority of food absorption happens in the small or large intestine. Perhaps you need a lot more than other people to get the same number of calories into you. Are you losing weight at the moment or is it stalled? I'd ask the doctor about this, you have complications that we wouldn't know much about (not being doctors). Something tells me a GP may not be that knowledgeable on this topic though, I think a specialist would have a better understanding. I know you have a bad GP situation though and getting a referral might be quite difficult. Hmm...

I think she means she has a not very large in size intestine rather than no 'large intestine' at all ! I think you could try up your calories a bit considering you are tall. I don't know about you but things like fruit just don't help fill me up I just have them as snacks! I need lot's of protein with some carb to fill me :)

Oh i see sorry I'm the confused one :) Yea that's the one that reabsorbs water isn't it

I had trouble with my intestines last year actually ! I had a burst appendix and didn't know so i pushed through the pain and eventually got peritonitis and had to have emergency operation ! Think they had to remove alot of tissue as it was all infected but i don't think they removed any intestine. I think they get slightly irritated now and then since I had the operation :/
