trail running versus street running...

The last 2 runs, I've gone out on trails at a local park and run out there...first time I've ever tried trail running...there are parts I have to walk because they are steep and I'm clumsy...don't want to fall and break something... I put on my run tracker and I'm actually going SLOWER than on my street runs, but boy, I sure feel like I'm working harder...anyone else have the same experience? I'm running the half marathon in October (again)...any idea if doing, say, half my runs on the trail will adversely affect my ability to complete the 13 miles? Today, I did a 3 mile trail, then 2 miles on the street following...

I have to say, trail running is nice...the scenery is better and it is nice and cool (relatively speaking) under the tree cover...

i LOVE trail runs but i do run slower on them than my street pace. I tend to burn more calories so long as i keep running and dont stop to enjoy the scenery. So long as you are still getting in your long and speed runs for your half marathon, trail runs as "easy" runs will probably improve your half marathon experience!

my dog likes the trails more than the streets...she can "hunt" squirrels and deer!
  • I used to trail run every Saturday morning in Duncanville. Now I live in Little Elm and I don't know where to find any trails. I've googled but no luck. Does anyone know where the closest trails to Little Elm are? Thanks

I'd take trails over pavement any day. Maybe because I don't have anything but pavement around me and trails aren't really an option =(

I love running trails, big fan of them. They will make you work harder & slow your pace down. But they are far more enjoyable for me.
They should have no adverse affect on your training, if anything I'd say trails will help. Just be careful not to roll an ankle.
  • Love trail runs. The park I run in has trails and black top, so my runs are pretty varied. I did trip over a root in the ground last month and ran the last mile with a bad cut on my knee. Oh, well. Just pick your feet up, I guess.
