From my understanding margarine contains an ingredient that does not occur in nature. It's structure is only a few molecules different than plastic. My doctor recommended Smart Balance spread. I've had good luck with that and it works well in recipes.

A dietician told me to cream together (use a blender or mixer) softened butter and olive oil, 1/2 cup of each. Not only does the butter stay soft in the fridge, it's better for you than margarine.

Ooooh, that sounds good...and how easy...! Thanks!

I don't worry about the "one molecule away from plastic" thing. Water is only one molecule away from hydrogen peroxide, and peroxide isn't good for drinking. Everything's only one molecule away from something. :) But that being said, I'm more likely to want to eat natural things than man-made things. And yes, people have to churn the butter, but they're not adding anything to the cream other than salt. I'm ok with that.

Oh! This solves the problem I was just complaining about in my last post! Gonna try it sometime .Thanks!

Land of Lakes sells a butter mixed with olive oil or canola oil, but it has some extra ingredients too (if that bothers you, doesn't bother me)

I swear by Kerrygold butter. I get it at Trader Joe's or Super G (Giant). Look for it . . . comes wrapped in gold foil.

    don't care
I prefer the flavor of this one particular brand of stick margarine, and I don't use anything else
  • Butter is better, margarine has no nutritional value at all. The chemical breakdown is very close to that of plastic. Use butter just be mindful and exercise portion control. You can Google butter vs margarine. You would be amazed.
