Sleeping pills..

I have a question...do sleeping pills like Ambien (which I take rarely) or overthecounter Unisom (which I take almost nightly) slow down your metabolism? Just curious, I was looking on some websites and can't quite tell. Any docs or nurses out their know about this? I know that getting enough sleep is important, especially for weight loss. I just have a lot of trouble sleeping without anything...I'll lay until 2am otherwise.

I don't know about links between weight gain and ambien or unisom. But have you ever tried taking melatonin to help aid in sleep? It's an all natural sleep aid that is actually part of our biological make up; some people just don't produce enough of it and thus have trouble sleeping. When I was writing my thesis I was stressed and had trouble sleeping so I began taking melatonin and it really helped. I would take 2 tablets about an hour before bed and drink a cup of peppermint tea and that really helped. So, it might be worth a try.0

I also have chronic sleep difficulties and I use melatonin most of the time. I can usually tell when I need something stronger but melatonin works great most of the time. You might want to give it a try.0

You also might try Celestial Seasoning's Sleepy time tea @ 0 calories.0

Well one thing I do know is that we NEED to get plenty of sleep....everyone does for our bodies to function in a healthy manner. Folks that excercise need it even more so.
I'm not a big advocate on pushing sleeping pills so I won't....lol YOu've got some good alternative choices offered you here it looks like.
But on occasion our sleep pattern can get way out of wack, due to so many various factors...stress, can be a biggee......or just plain keeping a sloppy sleeping scedule can come back to bite us big time in the butt! ( I was so bad about that in the past.....well, um look at me now posting at nearly 4a.m lol)
With that being said, I did check with my doc when I wasn't able to sleep for days, or the times I could fall asleep but not stay alseep or the reverse....couldn't fall alseep til it was almost time to wake up:grumble:
She gave me something i took for a very short bit of time and it restructured my whole sleep pattern.. WOW, it was so what my body needed. I can now lay down fall asleep and wake up before the alarm goes off......what a difference it's made in every aspect of my life.
Mich? Perhaps start off with some teas....decaf of course!!:noway: Think on how much caffeine your body is taking in through out the day if you drink caf beverages.
Yoga is also a wonder 'drug' regarding a great sleep....whip out the mat or towel and do several poses that are more considered evening/restful poses.
Let us hear back from you what works for you....it will probably take a bit of time for your body to reajust but it will surely be worth it in the long run:flowerforyou:0 -
Hi michnthecity I know what it is like not being able to drop off to sleep and even worse ( I think) to wake up at 2.00/3.00am and not be able to get back to sleep for 2 or3 hours  then having to wake up a few hours later feeling like "Death warmed up" and do a full days work.
I took a weekend course in "REIKI" channeling of the universal energy, we are all made up
of energy. I self heal at least once a week and if I am battling to get off to sleep I use "REIKI" and within minutes I am asleep.
Through "REIKI" I have learned to meditate, if I have had a really hectic day I will light a candle, burn some incense and meditate with my meditation music for about an hour before bedtime this does settle me down for a good night's sleep:bigsmile: .
It is not at all costly to attend a first degree "REIKI" course and once you have done the course you will be able to self heal AND offer "REIKI" to your friends, family, pets, plants, food in fact almost everything can benefit from "REIKI".
Why not look for a "REIKI" practitioner in your area, book a therapy session and see for yourself just how beneficial this form of healing is.
I hope you find something that works for you as well as "REIKI" works for myself ,my family, friends and pets .0 -
At last ~ someone who won't give me a polite blank look when I tell them I am a Reiki Master! I have been a Reiki Practictioner for 7 years and have been a Master for 6 and will gladly testify to the fact that the stuff WORKS! :happy:0
