Will eating more calories help me lose weight?

Right now I'm eating about 1200 calories a day (way below today.. but I plan on making a sandwich soon) so I should be around 1000... then will try to get some more food in my belly..

Being a busy mom of a 1.5 year old and a 2.5 year old, chasing them, cleaning, cooking, running errands..etc. I tend to be below my calories for the day..

I try to burn 200-300 calories a day, and eat 1200.. SO I think I'm coming in too low. I feel like when I eat more calories I gain weight and not lose.. Any advice? I DO make it a point to eat 1200 calories a day because I need that or I get crabby. But chasing 2 kids all day I believe burns more calories then an office job, and may require more calories. I want to lose weight, not make my body hold onto fat..

please, any words of advice would be great!!!! I was 157 last week (I weight myself tomorrow), and workout everyday (7 days in a row!!), my ultimate goal is 130.

My guess is eventually yes, although you might see a small gain right when you first start.

I NET 1750, and eat 2200 after eating my exercise calories.

I used to only eat about 1200 net calories a day and hit a pretty bad plateau. I upped to eating 2000 calories a day now and am losing. Sometimes you need more calories and if you don't eat them, you go into starvation mode and gain.

I think you may not be eating enough. You feel like you don't have time to get enough food (that's what I gather from your post, anyway)... but you have to feed the kids, right? Feed yourself when you feed them. If you absolutely cannot sit down for a meal, try adding a protein shake as a snack during the day. You have to give your body the nutrition it needs if you want it to work properly, and it won't burn fat if it's not working properly.

Also, you work out 7 days a week? What kind of workouts are we talking here? How high are your calorie burns? If you're doing intense exercise, you need at least one rest day a week. If you're doing strength training, you should rest each muscle group for one day between workouts -- for example, you can do arms on Monday, legs Tuesday, arms again Wednesday, legs Thursday... or you can do full-body Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but you shouldn't work the same muscle group on two consecutive days. The only exception that rule is abs and core.

You might see a slight gain in the beginning, as Rachel said. Your metabolism needs time to adjust. Give it 3 or 4 weeks before you give up.
  • I saw a nutritionist that said as long as I am eating 1200 it's okay not to eat back the exercise calories however I think that's only for a little while because I think if you are at 1200 for too long your body may hit a slump. The body takes time to adjust so maybe up it to 1300 for a couple weeks and see what happens. Another possibility for weight gain is if the extra calories are junk food or high in sodium which will make you retain more water. I think a lot of us eat junk food when we know we have extra caloreis (I'm guilty :>) but try adding another healthy food like an apple to up it. If all else fails consult a doc or nutritionist. Good luck.
  • I'm very new to all of this but I would think and have always heard muscle weighs more. Could you be gaining muscle with workouts 7 days a week?
