Heel Spurs

Has anyone had heel spurs? I've been having pain in my heels lately and I've been wondering if what I'm experiencing might be the beginnings of a heel spur. My heels only hurt when I stretch, but the pain feels like the muscle or tendon is pulling off the bone. It's not swollen, there's no protrusion, but every time I pull my toes towards my shin to stretch my calves, I feel like I'm ripping a bandaid off a wound. I'm not impaired by it - yet - and I don't want to spend the money on a doctor and have him dismiss it as "nothing". But, if there is something I can do to prevent it from becoming an impairment I'd love to know.

My son had spurs in high school. We went to store and got an insert for inside his shoe. They were kinda like a donut. Kept from putting direct pressure on them
  • Walk..don't run to a doctor! No joke. I started getting a weird sensation in my left foot two years ago. I kept exercising and found myself limping, hobbling..for almost TWO years. I ended up being diagnosed with a nerve problem and plantar fasciitis I do wear inserts now and i personally gave up both running and step aerobics. The pain was too much. If you can find, a podiatrist or an orthopedic doctor that does both x-rays and an ultrasound that would be great.

I am only writing this because mine started out so minor and quickly become super major. Please be careful.

I also have two very prominent bone spurs. All of my specialists have told me that the spur isn't the problem, it is the inflammation that is---I don't know.

Just be careful. I wouldn't want to wish what i went through on anyone.

I have plantar fasciitis (sp?) and also a heel spur... they go hand in hand.

Stretching your calves is EXTREMELY important, and roll your foot over a can of soup a few times a day. The tightening of these areas causes the tendon to pull on the heel, causing the spur to calcify. Also, make sure you have adequate shoes, and/or arch supports. I got mine at the foot dr.

Does not sound like heel spurs. Heel spurs would hurt the bottom of your heel when you walked. Sounds like tendons or ligament strain. I would only do gentle stretches and if it keeps up you have to see a doctor.

I have plantar fascitis and heel spurs on both feet. Do some internet research on the fascitis, it's interesting. They say before you get out of bed make sure you have shoes w/orthotics in them and roll your feet on a soup can and put on your shoes,. then wear your shoes all the time in the house. The pain comes from inflammation that your body is trying to heal. when you sleep your feet are bent and your body is very busy trying to heal and is forming scar tissue. When you get out of bed the first time, if you don't stretch and use the soup can to break down the scar tissue, it rips when you foot stretches out on the floor. Also in the evening put your feet up and use ice on them. I go to my chiropractor regularly for ultrasound therapy, it also helps to break up the tissue. I have been able to walk again and now do some jogging too! Good luck. It's really hard to do anything when your feet hurt.

Thanks for all the replies. My feet don't actually hurt and I'm not stopped from doing anything, but whenever I stretch my heels I feel that tearing sensation. I'll do some research and look for preventative measures to prevent it from becoming painful.
