How did I Lose on VACATION? Help!!

Okay, I'm at a loss here. (pun intended, ha!) Anyway, I've been at the same weight for over a month now, getting very frustrated. I've been working out, eating nearly all my exercise calories, and my weight hasn't budged.

So, we just spent a week visiting family, and while I ran 3 mornings and walked all day at an amusement park another day, I know I didn't work out as much as I typically do in a week. Also, I KNOW I was eating more calories. Several fast food meals, and mama's cooking, you know!

So, we get home last night. I weigh myself this morning expecting a few extra pounds, and I LOST 2 lbs. What gives????

I would appreciate any ideas. Did I just lose some muscle mass or have I maybe not been eating enough?

This happened to me before. My weight didn't budge for weeks, and then I had a few days where I hardly worked out and ate just under maintenance, and I lost a pound. I guess it just kicked my metabolism back to its usual self.

I have done this before. Sometimes our bodies get stuck in a rut, and the change gives it the boost it needs to get moving again. Sometime our bodies need us to eat a little more that's all.

Sometimes a shock to our bodies of more calories makes us lose! If you're been doing the same thing calorie-wise for a long time, perhaps it's time to change things up? I also lost when I went on vacation. It's a pretty common thing. Maybe try upping your calories for a week and see if the weight still keeps falling off even when you go back to your regular workout routine?

maybe you shouldn't have eaten all of your exercise calories? Sometimes eating them all back can get you stuck, experiment with eating a little bit less and see if the loss continues.

And also LOL wish I lost weight on holiday!
  • I've thought about upping my calories a bit to see if it helps. But how many more? One hundred? Two?

There is no magic number. Just experiment for a few weeks and see what works best.

Also, do you think maybe the vacation helped relax your mind a bit? Sometimes that is the best thing for your health.
  • It may be the change of exercise. I know you said you weren't exercising but you were walking, for hours, at the amusement park. I doubt you were "walking slow".

This is also a good point. I went on a trip to see some family, and we walked for hours on end. I lost weight even though I ate out a lot and didn't get to relax. (There is nothing relaxing about spending time with my family.)

I find I am much better in a restaurant, or on vacation because I am always on guard, and I am more active. At home with the pantry staring and beckoning me all day, that is my problem!

Big calorie deficits and lots of activity can hurt fat loss.

Sometimes people mistakenly adopt the idea that they will 'exercise off" the weight. When dieting down, it is better to reduce (not eliminate) training volume and rely on dietary control to burn off the fat.
