measuring my food

Ok, this has probably been asked (and answered) many times but I looked and couldn't find it.

When you measure your portions (meat for example), is the portion listed in MFP a pre-cooked weight or post cooking? 4 ounces of precooked hamburger isn't nearly as generous as 4 ounces post cooking. I've been using a pre-cooked weight, but it would be so much easier to measure post cooking.

Any ideas?

i've always measured it after cooking. not sure if that's how i'm supposed to do it, but it makes more sense to me.

i measure everything before cooking .. i dont know it's just easier for me to take the food out with my measuring cup and put it in a pan or pot.

I have always measured after cooking and I have still lost the weight that I wanted to. I find it more convenient.

I had pot roast the other night and if you scan thru a lot of it, you can find a cooked and precooked number,..OR you can create your own... Check this out http://www.newcaloriecounter.com/calories-in/calories_in_hamburger_meat.html
That might give you the info your looking for and a database to search other things. I just did a google search
    Happy Searching :)
  • thanks for the insights! and the website Wibikerlady!!! The only food I measure precooking is meat, so i may switch to a a standard system of post cooking weights.
  • I base my amounts off of pre-cooked weight. That's how it's done in the restaurants. (if you order a 6 oz steak it will note that that's the pre-cooked weight). I also find this easier for me because I put the precooked amounts into my "recipes" section since I'm cooking for my whole family. I'm also guilty of trying to find foods that read an actual number. I don't have a scale so I want to know that 5 carrots is a serving size - don't care about the 3 oz.

I usually measure after cooking but sometimes do it the other way. Honestly, it is only going to be about 1 oz. difference either way so I don't worry about it.
  • I have a chart that compares healthy food portions to sizes of everyday things. Meat should be the size of an iPod classic for example.
