does two bowls of cereal diet really work? or can it. struggling with just reducing my calories.

In theory, it could, because it most likely would allow a significant reduction in your overall calorie intake. However, is a bowl of cereal enough food for you? The servining they recommend is probably about 1 cup of cereal plus 1/2 cup of milk-- that doesn't go a long way to satiety. What you don't want to happen is to try to limit your food portions so drastically that you overcompensate later in the day or with snacks.
What would be better is to set a daily calorie goal (1200 seems to be the going rate on her for women, about 1400 for guys) and set limits of around 300-400 calories per meal. How much food can you really consume for that allowance? What choices will fill you up while keeping you in bounds. If the cereal thing can do it, by all means give it a go. Just be sure to weigh/carefully measure everything so you don't overindulge.
