Hi. I'm new to MFP. I started about a week ago. I've been eating 1200 calories a day and not doing any exercise other than chasing after my munchkins. I have lost 10 lbs. in two weeks. Literally everyday the scale goes down. I weigh in everyday because it keeps me motivated! MFP says that I should lose 2 lbs. per week. I'm heavier than I've ever been (with the exception of being pregnant.) Could this be why I'm losing so fast? I drink a lot of water. I don't think that it's water weight but I could be wrong. Maybe it will slow down now. How many pounds do you lose on average per week? Just curious. Thanks!

  • It is probably water weight. However you could just be that the foods you are eating work together in you body and burn fat faster. How do you feel? Do you feel dizzy from the rapid weight loss?

Congrats on the weight loss! I have found that I always tend to lose more weight at the beginning than at the end. I'd just say that 1200 calories a day sounds like very little, though. I know I'd be super grumpy if that was all I was eating. I've had to slow my weight loss down to make sure that I don't get lightheaded when I'm working out or grumpy from not eating enough. I suspect keeping up with 1200 a day will be hard over the long run so I'd eat more! You'll still lose weight, and I promise that slow weight loss is easier to keep off.

    Way to go!!!

A lot of folks do tend to lose quickly in the first week or two because they weren't eating right or drinking enough water before. Your progress will likely slow but you'll probably see a steady 1-2 pound loss per week. My average last year when I was at my heaviest was 1.5 pounds per week. Now that I'm a bit closer to goal (just 32 pounds to go), I seem to lose more like 1 pound per week.

i lost alot in the beginning also. I have MFP set to lose 2lbs per week. I'm averaging about 1.57lbs.
  • thats really good! When I first started I lost a lot of weight at first and I think everyone does, but now I am losing on average about 1 to 2 lbs a week. just stick with it and you will do great and try to add some exercise you will start to feel amazing and when you do exercise eat a little more. Thats my advise good luck doll :)

I have also lost 10lbs in my first 2 weeks back on MFP. Alot of my weight was water weight, I have been eating less sodium & drinking tons of water. I am bracing myself for about a 2-3 lbs loss every week , sometimes less from here on out. I too am the biggest I have been other then pregnancy so I think eating better, drinking water and adding a workout to my life has really made a difference. Keep up the good work!!!!

Hi, My first thought was loosing water but I could be wrong. I have heard if your a little heavier you will loose more weight at first then it slows down. I kinda think 1-2 lbs a week is avg for me... I'm 5'3" and I started on July 13 (i think) I weighted 161 then now I weight 150 as of Aug 6th. But I workout 4-6 days a week!

I've been feeling great. I eat a lot of low calorie vegetables throughout the day so I rarely feel hungry. I'm vegetarian so I don't have to use a lot of calories for meat. I eat eggs, hummus, nuts, beans and peanut butter instead. Thanks for your responses!

Since you just started some of it could be water weight. However, if you lose more than 1% of your weight per week, it's also muscle you're losing-- which will affect your metabolism.

Since I'm nursing a baby, I eat about 2200-2300 calories every day. I lose about 2.5 lbs. per week.

It's difficult finding that balance to eat more and still lose-- but not lose too much. I definitely only want to lose the fat. I need that muscle to help burn more fat!

And I agree, seeing that scale go down EVERY SINGLE DAY is highly motivating. Also consider that inches lost is motivating and keeping a food journal to track your success towards healthier eating is motivating.

I nursed my daughter until she was almost 12 months old. It was a nice way to burn up more calories and do something great for my daughter. I immediately gained 10 lbs after she was done! Yikes! Thanks for your post. I don't want to lose any of my muscle either! I'm going to add exercise this week and eat up those calories and if I still seem to be losing too much weight maybe I'll add some more calories per day to make it 1 lb. a week. It's hard to purposely slow down the weight loss though! I am hoping to lose 50 lbs. by my next birthday (Jan. 2). Even with 2 lbs. per week it's a reasonable goal, I think. Especially since I've already lost 10lb. total. (5.5 since I joined MFP.) Thanks for your reply!
