the different types of salad (greens versus other)

i have a recipe for shrimp and black bean arugula salad and a recipe for shrimp, black bean, papaya and avocado salad. both salads sound similar because of the word 'salad', but one contains lettuce and one just means all the ingredient mixed together.

i wish there were a way to differentiate when one includes greens in a 'salad'. crab salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, they all get a bad rap. :)

what do you think?

    i propose the following terminology:

mixed green salad - salad with mixed greens as the base
chicken salad - salad with chicken as the base
tuna salad - salad with tuna as the base
macaroni salad - salad with macaroni as the base
potato salad - salad with potato as the base

    think it will catch on?

and then, like, fruit salad with fruit as the base?

    I find this confusing.

    I propose the following terminology:

cruciferous salad - salad with mixed greens as the base
cluck and chuck - salad with chicken as the base
wavy gravy - salad with tuna as the base
little italy - salad with macaroni as the base
ground chuck - salad with potato as the base
pants - salad with fruit as the base

Much easier to remember and much more logical.

I think we should stop calling them salads altogether and make up new words for them.

    Mixed green salad - Chlorophyllium
    Chicken salad - Blooky
    tuna salad - Ramblam
    macaroni salad - Shobobo
    potato salad - Lomb

Fruit salad shall remain fruit salad because anything else would be stupid.

Oh! That is MUCH easier! Because FRUIT SALAD and PANTS is a very logical association!

what about when chicken salad is part of the lettuce salad but not the base? is that chicken salad on mixed greens or chicken salad salad?

i was pondering the same thing myself....

i think i would call it "green salad with grilled chicken" because when i think "chicken salad" i always think of the kind that's mostly chicken & mayo.
