I've just bought a Heart Rate Monitor

I've just ordered a heart rate monitor to help me track my calories and fitness levels, has anybody else got one? or use one?
The machines at the gym dont do the greatest calorie count, and I am a bit dubious about the calorie amounts on the site - they do seem a bit over zealous.
Shaz ;o)

I have a polar HRM and love it, best purchase ever made, also very accurate.0

I just bought my polar ft7 over the weekend too. Haven't used it yet other than to set it up.......0

Yep, i too use a Polar. Best bit of gym equiptment ever. Get one that talks to the gym machines too. Great for interval training. Watch your heart rate rise, then time how long it takes for your heart rate to go down, to see how fit you're getting. Then track your calories after a workout. Much better than the gym machines as you can put your height and weight into the HRM and get a more accurate calorie count.0

Yep I have one to, best thing ever. The machines cannot tell how YOUR body is working it does not give am acurate read. The HRM also tells how much fat your burning and also tells you your fitness level as you work harder.Best thing ever0

I have a Polar FT7 and I love it... easy to use/set up and accurate calorie estimation.
What kind did you buy?0 -
Just got my Polar FT7 in the mail yesterday. Used it during my workout this am. So far, so good!!!0

I agree, the machines at the gym appear off and MFP is weird. I purchased a Polar FT4 and LOVE IT!
Now..... I only enter the number that my HRM gives me.. I use nothing else.
Congrats on your new purchase, its going to be your new best friend!0 -
About how much does it cost and where can I get one?0

It depends.. Polar FT4 can run from 50-80 dollars. Polar FT7 can run from 70 to 100 dollars. There are other brands of HRM's that can be cheaper/more expensive, but I caution you against going too cheap or getting watch only versions. You def. need one that has a watch and chest strap.
You can buy them at sporting goods stores, e-bay, amazon, best buy.0 -
I'm interested in getting a Polar HRM.
Is there a significant difference between the ft4 and the ft7?
Thanks.0 -
I just started using the Polar FT7. A huge difference in calorie count from MFP and other sites. If you're worried about the chest strap fitting, don't. I have a 54" chest and the strap still has extra to expand. Best buy in years, you're worth it, buy one.0

I'm new to this lifestyle change and have been exercising mostly everyday from 30-120 minutes.
Is the MFP exercise over on estimation of calories burned?? I'm just trying to get a broad idea of this whole eating back exercise calories and whatnot ... but I've been reading that MFP is too generous which makes me wonder if that's why I haven't been dropping. I know I"m definitely eating more healthier and exercising, which was something that never happened before, so I know I'm in the right direction. I really need to look into one of these HRM!0 -
Polar ft60 here and I absolutely love it!0

Don't forget to subtract your resting heart rate from your total at the end of your work out. Because MFP already has given you credit for that.0
