SALT

I never really gave salt much thought before. I know it's a neccessary nutrient, but one most of us get too much of. So I'm wondering: does ANYONE have a 'salt free' diet? how about 'sugar free'?
is that even healthy? how would you go about it?

If you work out your body needs sodium. It is a necessary nutrient. Low salt diets are good though.0

I watch my sodium intake as well as my sugar. I do my best to stay out of the red for sure but the less processed foods you eat the easier that is. It makes a huge difference. I notice a difference in my weight(on the scale) and the bloating feeling you get when I am careful with sugar and salt (and alcohol too).0

Salt-free would be doable. Sodium-free would not. Sodium occurs naturally in many foods, and you need somewhere around 1000-1500 mg per day to ensure good health. It's when you overdo it that it's a problem, so it's usually a good thing to avoid added salt.
Same with sugar. It's good to avoid added sugar. But it would be nearly impossible, and not healthy, to have absolutely no sugars in your diet. Some sugar occurs naturally in many foods, and it's good for you. It's just not good for you to eat it by the cup.0 -
Look at my diary for today! that's a looowww sodium diet.
By the way- I don't usually eat like this!!0 -
Salt free is definitely not healthy. We need sodium for metabolic functions like maintaining fluid levels and impulse firing.
However, an "added salt free" diet would be perfect. Eliminating table salt and packaged/processed foods would be great for your body. Because sodium occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, dairy, and lean meats, it's impossible to go sodium-free. But you can learn to enjoy the natural tastes of pure, whole foods without added salt, and your body will LOVE you!0 -
I try to keep my sodium at 1500 or less a day (doesn't always work). No need to be salt-free, just keep your sodium intake in a healthy range.0

Wouldn't dream of it. Sodium (part of salt) "keeps the lights on" = no sodium, no muscle contractions and your heart stops.
Insofar as "too much salt", I've heard that for soooo long. The only medical documents I've seen described the increase in BP in measurements that I couldn't understand. :-(
Google this phrase and check out the top few links:
salt study blood pressure
I would love to see links to studies that show BP deltas vs salt/sodium deltas in terms that I could understand.0 -
Salt is something your body needs but can't produce on its own. There are those of us who are not negatively affected by salt. And crave it more than other people. I used to eat salt plain as a kid.0

I basically "Salt" my salt. My body craves it. I do not have issues with too much. My BP is very very low & I do not have a problem retaining fluids.
I am actually replenishing everything that I sweat out. I drink Pickle Sport, eat pickle popsicles & lick salt packets on long bike rides & runs.
Being a welder & working outside in these high temps    , my hubby is now convinced the pickle juice helps tremendously.0 -
