I recently got back from a cruise! Hope you have an amazing time... but it is true that you can put on 1lb a day on board so remember to stay focused :D
  • Awesome!! I LOVE going on cruises! I'm going on my 3rd one the last week of September! It will be interesting to see how it goes... as it's my first time going as a vegetarian, and also being serious about staying in shape.

We just got back from a 7 day cruise. So far, the scale only says I gained 1 lb while I was gone. not bad. I'm sure after my workout, that extra water weight will be gone. My hubs is a vegetarian. We were on Carnival and they had many veg options at every meal. We were very impressed. And they had so many healthy options - fresh vegetables, lots of fresh fruit at all the meals, grilled/baked fish/chicken/shrimp. The key is just saying no to the dessert. There are "diet" desserts at dinner time that have splenda in them. Occasionally, I went ahead and tried that. I think I splurged 2 times on the 7 day cruise. once on rum bread pudding (oh yum!) and again on a chocolate cheesecake (part of the chocolate buffet! but only get ONE thing from that if you choose to go thru that line). I exercised in the gym about 3 times for one hr each time (did treadmill and elliptical, some weights and situps/pushups).

And another good thing for us, we had a 2 yr old that demanded we carry her. I was cursing my hubs for not letting me take her umbrella stroller, but it was all good b/c the added weight of carrying her gave us a workout every day. We tried to take the stairs on the ship all the time, even if we were going from deck 3 to 9! My 8 yr old son kept up with us. Besides waiting on the elevators takes too long and they're too crowded.
Although it's tempting, do not go crazy on a cruise. You'll deeply regret the back tracking you'll have to do when you get home from your trip. The point of the trip is not the food, it's the fun experience w/family/friends/loved ones! You'll have fun!

I've only been on one. It was a 7 day western Caribbean cruise on Carnival. fantastic! We found our way around and learned along the way.
I say if you can drive to your nearest departure dock - Galveston, Miami, LA, Seattle?? -- that would be easier than paying extra money to fly there, especially for a first cruise. Less hassle.
If you can splurge for the balcony room - the views are amazing! it's so nice to sit out on the balcony w/coffee or a glass of wine!

So jealous! When I graduate nursing school we are going on a cruise though. Come on, January 2013. We will be leaving Snowy Pennsylvania for Warm Caribbean waters. Ah, I cant wait!

Enjoy your cruise! If you are cruising Carnival, Check out the midnight buffet- If only to see the "art sculptures" (food) its pretty awesome. hmm, i go at midnight to admire carved food....no wonder i am fat!
