  • I buy the amish free range one's from a farmer's market nearby (fresh - not frozen). Costs slightly more but I've noticed they are much fresher and juicier and more consistent. I grill LOTS of them. I may start growing feathers and clucking soon I fear. Ha!
  • Hey,

I use off the bone breats without skin!!
NEVER have chicken skin if you want to loose weight.... Off the top of my head I think 80% of fat content from a chicken is in the skin!! Not sure aboutn the on/off the bone nutrients though!!

Boneless, Skinless what ever's on sale. I don't think the brand matters that much.

When it comes to logging fresh chicken: I use the Livestrong posting in the database. After comparing many, many google sites and MFP that one is most accurate for non-frozen chicken breast.

When it comes to buying: I buy the 3kg pack of frozen chicken from Costco b/c it's delicious, the best price and easy and even lower in cals 85 cals per 100g breast. Frozen chicken is higher in sodium i.e about 300-500mg but even with that we almost never go over 1200 mg a day. I'm a vegan now so no more chicken for me.

Don't really think it matters too much. Though there are some variations between brands; it probably isn't significant enough to matter.

Preparation, most of the time marinade for a few hours, sometimes a day or so in advance. Then grill it!

Regarding the different brands. Typically, we buy fresh (not frozen) and usually whatever brand fits the budget (even the store brand). Sometimes I need to do a bit of extra trimming off the fat for some brands (e.g. the store brand); but that's really not significant.

I stay away from the frozen stripped down ones. Even before watching fat intake, I didn't like them. They always seem like mush once defrosted.

I roast, bake or grill on the bone also. It makes a huge difference (to me) in the taste.

Check the packaging one the ones available to you. A lot of them are pumped with a salt solution to keep them juicy when cooking, I don't want or need the extra salt.

Free range is a great way to go if it's available to you. The taste difference can be amazing, much more satisfying-but it is not cheap.

I like to buy the split chicken breasts....bone and skin included. You get these much cheaper and with a good knife you can have that breast away from the bone in seconds. Peel of the skin and good to go. Good way to save some money and it seems that these are usually larger than the ones already cut away from the bone.

I buy the 10 pound bag of frozen B S breasts from Costco. They are HUGE! Most of them weigh anywhere between 9 and 14 ounces frozen and I end up serving half breasts to my family or cut them into tenders. They are always firm and juicy after roasting or grilling and the price can't be beat.

ETA: Another poster mentioned sodium and I actually looked at the sodium content of these when I was opening the package last night. 200 mg sodium per 4 ounce serving.
  • we buy them by the bulk at a meat store
    10# for $13 not bad!
mfp database has so many options but some are too off
    i google it.
