I have recently taken up the hobby of jogging, I absolutely love the feeling I get from it, so here goes the questions. How many miles do you start with? What speed do you usually keep during long runs? What are the best shoes to wear? I currently run about 2 miles a day, would 3 miles be too much for someone who just started last week? I usually do a 12 minute mile for 24 minutes equaling 2 miles, am I looking at speed or time? Thanks for any suggestions!

First off, congratulations on starting running, that is great!
There is no perfect answer to your question, speed and distance is completely different for every person in their development. What I would suggest if you are running every day is alternating speed and length days. Run 1-1.5 miles one day at a fast pace, and the followng day go maybe 2-3 miles at the 12 min/mile pace. Make sure to take a day off during the week. It is really whatever you can handle, but every few weeks, try to add a little more distance to the distance days, and a little more speed to the speed days.

The best shoes to wear are the ones that are best for you.

Find a running store (not Foot Locker or anything like that, but a RUNNING STORE) and go for a fitting. They should evaluate your stride, your arches, etc., and find a few different running shoes for you to try on. You pick from those which you like best by feel, look, whatever.

They aren't really much more expensive, but they will help your running immensely.
