Okay so today I changed my goal settings and am monitoring sugar as well....and it blew my mind to see that my sugarfree skinny macciato still has 17 g of sugar! may have to find a new bevvie!! damn you non-fat milk!!!! I hate the taste of SOY!!!!

Why don't you just get regular brewed coffee and put skim milk in it? It will use less milk than a macchiato (I'm assuming you're referring to the caramel macchiatos (sp?) from starbucks?), so that will keep the sugar count down. If you still want sugar free syrup, then just put that in a regular coffee. It's also cheaper...0

"Sugar" is just one of the basic forms of Carbhydrate. Even natural foods like Corn break down into "Sugar" in their purest state. The same goes for most fruits and vegetables the same.
it's Added Sugar, that you need to be concerned with and "Sugar Free" simply means the products is unsweeetened by additional sugars.
It doesn't mean there is 0 carb content in the product.0 -

I know but not near as yummy!!!! I guess I have to face fact and go back to Tea in the mornings!! I am not a fan of coffee on its own and a latte is pretty much the only way I get milk in the day so the nutritionist and I thought it was a fair trade off LMAO!
Since I am at camp next week....I shall try and detox off the bucks LOL0 -

Are these an every day thing? If not, why can't you have one as a treat? And cut your sugar elsewhere that day? I think restricting ourselves from something, just makes us want it that much more. I'm watching my sugar & carbs as well (seeing great results too) but hey I love my crap food. I had a candy bar a couple of days ago. I made sure it fit into my day. No biggy. And let me tell you, it was gooooooooooood! And the best part, I felt abso-freakin'-lutely no guilt! Which made me feel better about myself. I am the best when it comes to putting myself down!
And, DaVinci makes a tasty sugar free syrup line. Maybe make them for yourself at home for an occasional treat, because even when it says "sugar-free" it doesn't mean healthy.0 -

Who cares if a food you enjoy has 17 grams of sugar. It's not going to make you fat. Also, if you mix that food with other nutrients (protein, fat, fiber, etc) then the insulin response from the sugar (GI level of the food) will be completely altered and it won't matter anyway.0 -

Okay you're my new favorite! LMAO! I am trying to work hard on getting my regular eating habits in line with healthy eating goals. I would love to eat Pure..or Free...or whatever they call it...oh clean! thats it....
But that is probably a few steps off for me right now. to be honest I am actually just trying to figure out how I am going to make it through a week long camp when i have absolutely NO CONTROL over any of the food I am being served! I do a fair amount of running around after the girls...so I am hoping that may offset the food choices and of course there is portion control!0 -

There isn't much you can do when you're being served food at camp. You can control portions but that's about as far as you can take. Enjoy your time at camp, try not to over-eat and then get back to business when you get home.
As much as a lot of people here will tell you that you should eat healthy this and healthy that (clean food....whatever that means), the truth of the matter is that you're going to end up craving foods you really enjoy if you cut them out of your diet. If you have some sort of eating disorder past then maybe it is best if you completely alter your diet plan to avoid certain situations and foods. However, if you don't have that problem then it's probably best to have that little bit of a treat every day in order to psychologically keep yourself on track. We can all spend a week eating brown rice, veggies and lean chicken but sometimes it comes down to wanting that ice cream, that cookie, that piece of pizza, etc. If you completely deny yourself from eating things you enjoy, you're setting yourself up for failure down the road.
The best diet plan is the diet plan you can stick to for the rest of your life.
The best exercise plan is the exercise plan you can stick to for the rest of your life.
If your diet/exercise don't fit into that category then you need to slowly move them in that direction for a life of healthy habits and enjoyment of the time you have. Best of luck.0 -

I agree. This is a lifestyle change that you need to be able to live with. Life is all about the experiences and you need to be able to strike a balance between eating healthy and living a happy life. Avoiding all sugar just isn't a feasible long term way to manage your weight. If you moderate everything you should be fine, heck even an occasional splurge is good for you.0 -

Its true and I have the privledge of working with a top notch medical team including a nutritionist and they are pretty awesome! They are not fans of exclusion and fad dieting and we slowly make changes on making the healthy choices (such as getting leaner cuts of meat, more fish etc) and enjoying the food I am eating so that it stays as a life long change!
We are working up from walking and aqufit to dancing and light weights and whatever else I think I would like to tackle next! I am blessed to be part of the Girl Guides of Canada and so its easy to attend camps etc with the girls and do fun "exercise" while giving back to my community!
It took me 14 years to put on 100 pounds, so I am not suprised it will take longer than 6 months to turn the train around!0 -
I think there are worse places to get sugar than from skim milk. I drink lattes as an occasional treat and when I make them at home, I usually use soy milk. That being said, I recently spent 2 months in Poland and drank a latte every single morning. It was full-fat milk too only because I didn't know how to say "non-fat" in Polish. I wasn't actively trying to lose weight at the time and I still managed to lose 5-10 pounds. My point is, I think there are worse places to get your sugar. If you're plateauing then that's one thing, but if you're still losing weight and otherwise eating healthy, then I don't think it's such a big problem. (But I'm just guessing here...)
On another note, you said that you don't like the taste of soy milk. Have you tried it at starbucks? Not all soy milk tastes the same. I only like Silk brand soy milk (from the ones I've tried) and that's usually what they use at Starbucks. Just a thought...0 -

Starbucks used to use Silk, but now they use their own brand formulated just for the company.
Twasney, your "skinny caramel macchiato" isn't healthy. The espresso and non-fat milk are healthy, and the sugar-free vanilla syrup that goes into it has no sugar, but the gobs of caramel that goes on top of each and every macchiato isn't. And there is no sugar-free substitute for it. Next time you're at a Starbucks, go check out the little bottles of caramel that they're selling, and check out all the nutritional info on them, because it's the same as what's being put on top of your drink. Try getting just a regular sugar-free flavored latte, like a skinny vanilla latte, skinny caramel latte, skinny cinnamon dolce latte, skinny hazelnut latte, or combine any of those 4 together. Or, try a misto (half steamed milk, half coffee), or an iced coffee with milk, if you like it cold.0 -

I have only had soy milk at starbucks. I appreciate the advice! The reason I have become so concious of the sugar is just that I have not lost a single ounce in 1 month! I have lost inches though which is a lovely NSV! I want to kick out of this plateau so that means kicking up the exercise and watching the carbs, sodium and sugar!0
